Bilingualism and Multilingualism

Multilingualism is the ability to speak and understand more than one language.

Bilingualism has been shown to enhance cognitive abilities, improve memory, and increase job opportunities. It does not make it more difficult to learn new languages.

Second language acquisition is the process of acquiring a second language.

Age, motivation, and native language are all factors that can influence second language acquisition. Intelligence is not a factor.

Code-switching is the ability to use two languages interchangeably.

Simultaneous bilingualism, sequential bilingualism, and additive bilingualism are all types of bilingualism. Subtractive bilingualism is not a type of bilingualism.

Language attrition is the loss of one's native language.

Language attrition can lead to difficulty understanding native language speakers, difficulty speaking native language, and difficulty reading and writing in native language. It does not lead to improved cognitive abilities.

Code-mixing is the use of two or more languages in a single conversation.

Code-mixing can enhance communication, increase understanding, and clarify meaning. It does not lead to confusion.

Bilingual borrowing is the use of two or more languages in a single word or phrase.

Spanglish, Franglais, and Chinglish are all examples of bilingual borrowing. Standard English is not an example of bilingual borrowing.

Bilingual writing is the use of two or more languages in a single text.

Bilingual writing can enhance communication, increase understanding, and clarify meaning. It does not lead to difficulty in reading and understanding.

Bilingual singing is the use of two or more languages in a single song.
