Hummingbirds are the only birds capable of sustained backward and sideways flight due to their unique ball-and-socket shoulder joint that allows 360-degree rotation. They can also hover in place by flapping their wings in a figure-eight pattern. Penguins are flightless, kingfishers can't fly backwards, and bowerbirds are regular fliers.
