Akbar Shah II, the penultimate Mughal emperor, gave the title of 'Raja' to the social reformer Ram Mohan Roy in 1831. Roy was sent to England as an envoy of the Mughal Emperor to plead for an increase in the Emperor's pension and allowance. This title recognized his status as a representative.
