Indian Independence and Political History

Vithalbhai Patel, elder brother of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, became the first Indian President (Speaker) of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1925. His election marked a significant milestone in the gradual Indianization of administrative positions within British colonial governance.

C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) served as the last Governor General of India from 1948-1950 and the first Indian to hold this position after Lord Mountbatten. He was a prominent freedom fighter and the only Indian to serve as Governor General.

Captain Lakshmi Sahgal (also known as Laxmi Sehgal) led the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, the women's wing of Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army. She was a doctor turned revolutionary who inspired many Indian women to join the freedom struggle.

World War II ended in 1945 with the surrender of Axis powers - Germany in May and Japan in September after the atomic bombings. The years 1942-1944 were during the war but before its conclusion.

Britain purchased control of the Suez Canal from Egypt in 1875 through the acquisition of shares from the Khedive Ismail Pasha, who needed money to pay off Egypt's debts. Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli arranged the purchase, giving Britain a crucial strategic interest in the route to India. China, India, and Russia did not acquire the canal at that time.

Atomic bombs were used in World War II - the United States dropped 'Little Boy' on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and 'Fat Man' on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. These were the first and only nuclear weapons used in warfare. 'Blockbuster', 'carpet', and 'mortar' refer to conventional bombing methods or weapons, not nuclear weapons.

The historic "Purna Swaraj" (Complete Independence) resolution was indeed passed at the 1929 INC session held in Lahore, with Jawaharlal Nehru as President. This resolution declared January 26, 1930 as Independence Day. Lahore (now in Pakistan) was the correct venue, not Dhaka, Mumbai, or Delhi.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah (M.A. Jinnah) served as Dadabhai Naoroji's private secretary when he contested and won the 1892 British Parliament election from the Finsbury Central constituency. This was a significant collaboration in early Indian political history, long before Jinnah's role in partition.

Rajkumari Amrit Kaur (Princess Amritkaur) served as the Health Minister in independent India's first cabinet, making her the only woman minister. She was from the Kapurthala royal family and a close associate of Gandhi. Sarojini Naidu was a prominent freedom fighter but died in 1949 before joining the cabinet.

In the historic 1939 Tripura INC election, Subhash Chandra Bose defeated Pattabhi Sitaramayya, who was Gandhi's preferred candidate. This victory represented the ideological split between Bose's more militant approach and Gandhi's satyagraha philosophy. Bose later resigned due to differences with Gandhi.

Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee (Vyomeshchandra Banerjee) was indeed the first President of INC at its 1885 Bombay session. A.O. Hume was the founder but not president. Surendranath Banerjee was a contemporary leader but not the first president. Dadabhai Naoroji became president later (1886, 1893, 1906).

Sir Pherozeshah Mehta was indeed known as the "Lion of Bombay" for his powerful oratory and legal career. He was a prominent moderate leader, president of INC (1890), and played a key role in Bombay's civic development. Tilak was "Lokmanya," Gokhale was "Servant of India," and Naoroji was "Grand Old Man."
