Indian History: Ancient and Modern Firsts

C. Rajagopalachari became the first Indian Governor-General of independent India in 1948, after Lord Mountbatten. He served until 1950 when the office was replaced by the President of India under the new Constitution.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was India's first Deputy Prime Minister, serving from 1947-1950 under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He was also India's first Home Minister and played a key role in integrating princely states.

Rajkumari Amrit Kaur was India's first woman Cabinet Minister, serving as Health Minister from 1947-1957. She was a princess of Kapurthala and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi in the freedom movement.

Sir Archibald Nye was the last British Governor-General who continued briefly after independence (August 15, 1947 to June 21, 1948) until C. Rajagopalachari took over as the first Indian Governor-General.

Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit (sister of Jawaharlal Nehru) became the first woman and first Indian to serve as President of the UN General Assembly in 1953. She was also India's first woman Ambassador to the USSR, USA, and Mexico.

V.T. Krishnamachari was the first Vice-Chairman of the Planning Commission of India, serving from 1950-1951. The Planning Commission was established in 1950 to oversee India's five-year plans for economic development.

Sarojini Naidu was the first Indian woman to become a Governor, serving as Governor of United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh) from 1947-1949. She was also known as the Nightingale of India for her poetry.

General K.M. Cariappa was the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, taking over from General Sir Roy Bucher in 1949. He led the Indian forces during the 1947-48 Kashmir war and later retired as Field Marshal.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad served as India's first President from 1950 to 1962 after independence. C. Rajagopalachari was the last Governor-General of India, not President. Nehru was the first Prime Minister, and Mountbatten was the last Viceroy.

Indira Gandhi received Bharat Ratna in 1971, making her the first Indian woman to receive this honor. Mother Teresa received it in 1980, Aruna Asaf Ali in 1997, and M. S. Subbulakshmi in 1998.

Dholavira, located in present-day Gujarat, is renowned among Harappan sites for its highly sophisticated water management system. The city featured an intricate network of reservoirs, step wells, and water channels that demonstrated advanced engineering capabilities. While Mohenjodaro and Harappa had drainage systems, Dholavira's water conservation and management structures were particularly remarkable.

The Sumerians referred to the Indus region as 'Meluhha' in their cuneiform texts. This term appears in Sumerian records dating back to around 2000 BCE, describing trade contacts with the Indus Valley Civilization. The name 'Sindu' came later from Sanskrit, while 'Indus' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Sindhu' through Persian and Greek influences.

Fish motifs appear prominently in both Harappan seals (often as religious symbols) and in Vedic traditions (though less emphasized than other animals). The fish symbol appears in Vedic literature and has continuity in later Hinduism as Matsya avatar. Bull was sacred to both cultures but was more prominent in Vedic worship.

Linga (phallic) worship is attested in Harappan archaeological findings and continued as a central practice in later Hinduism, particularly Shaivism. The discovery of phallic symbols at Harappan sites shows continuity of this religious tradition. Vishnu worship emerged later as a distinct tradition.

Despite advanced metalworking skills, swords are conspicuously absent from Harappan archaeological findings. They used daggers, spears, bows and arrows, but not swords. This absence distinguishes Harappan civilization from contemporary Mesopotamian cultures where swords were present.

Indra is the most prominent deity in Rig Veda with approximately 250 hymns dedicated to him, more than any other god. He is celebrated as the slayer of Vritra, bringer of rains, and warrior god. Agni comes second with about 200 hymns.

The bull was sacred in both Harappan civilization (evident from numerous seal depictions) and Vedic culture (associated with Indra and Shiva later). The cow was particularly revered in Vedic culture but the bull had special significance in both traditions, making 'Bull, Cow' the correct pairing.

'Jana' (meaning tribe or people) is the most frequently occurring political term in Rig Veda, appearing approximately 275 times. It refers to the tribal unit as the basic political organization. 'Vis' (settlement/clan) appears about 170 times, while 'Rastra' (kingdom/territory) appears much later.

The Rig Veda contains references to 'Samudra' which in early Vedic context likely meant large bodies of water including oceans, lakes, or confluence of rivers. This indicates the Vedic people had knowledge of or concept of large water bodies, though debate continues about whether they directly saw the ocean.
