The Khetri (or jau) pot used in North Indian Navaratri celebrations contains wheat or barley grains that are sown to sprout. These sprouts symbolize prosperity, growth, and agricultural abundance. The pot is worshipped daily as the seeds germinate, representing the goddess's blessings of fertility and abundance.

Navaratri is celebrated in the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin, which typically falls in September-October according to the Gregorian calendar. This nine-night festival culminates with Vijayadashami (Dussehra) on the tenth day. Ashwin is the seventh month in the Hindu lunar calendar.

In the traditional Durga Puja context, Ganesh is believed to represent wealth, fame, and prosperity among the four children of Goddess Durga. The four children are Ganesh, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kartikeya, each representing different aspects of life - Ganesh for success and prosperity, Lakshmi for wealth, Saraswati for knowledge, and Kartikeya for courage.

Devi Paksha is the special name of the fortnight in which Durga Puja is celebrated. It refers to the waxing phase of the moon in the Ashwin month, dedicated entirely to Goddess worship. This period begins on Mahalaya and continues until the new moon, representing the most sacred time for Devi worship.

According to Hindu mythology, the demon Mahisashura received the boon of immortality from Lord Brahma after intense penance. The boon stated that no man or god could kill him, which made him invincible. This led to the creation of Goddess Durga, who eventually defeated and killed him, earning the title Mahisashuramardini.

The Gupta Empire (c. 320-550 CE) stabilized and unified much of India after the decline of Ashoka's Mauryan Empire. The Gupta period is often called the Golden Age of ancient India due to achievements in arts, science, and culture.

Basant Panchami, celebrating the arrival of spring and goddess Saraswati, is especially important in West Bengal where it's known as Saraswati Puja. While celebrated across India, it has particular prominence in Bengal.

Karachi Puja (also known as Ker Puja or Karchi Puja) is a traditional festival celebrated in Tripura. It's a tribal festival unique to the state.
