NEP 2020: Strengthening Teacher Education and Training

NEP 2020 aims to enhance the quality of teacher education, improve recruitment and selection processes, and promote continuous professional development for teachers. It does not seek to reduce the number of teacher education institutions.

NEP 2020 mandates a minimum qualification of Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) for teachers at the elementary level.

NEP 2020 proposes merging teacher education institutions with universities, establishing autonomous teacher education institutions, and introducing a four-year integrated teacher education program. It does not seek to discontinue the practice of distance education in teacher education.

The National Initiative for School Heads (NISH) is aimed at providing leadership training to school principals to enhance their effectiveness in managing and leading schools.

The proposed National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST) under NEP 2020 includes content knowledge and pedagogy, learner-centered pedagogy, and assessment and evaluation, but not classroom management.

The primary goal of the proposed National Mission for Mentoring (NMM) in teacher education is to provide mentorship support to beginning teachers to help them transition into their roles and improve their teaching practices.

NEP 2020 proposes conducting a common eligibility test for teacher recruitment, establishing a national teacher recruitment agency, and adopting a merit-based selection process for teachers. It does not propose allowing states to set their own teacher recruitment criteria.

The proposed four-year integrated teacher education program under NEP 2020 includes 3 years of coursework and 1 year of internship.

NEP 2020 proposes establishing a National Institute for Teachers' Education (NITE), developing a national framework for CPD, and providing financial support for teachers' CPD activities. It does not propose making CPD mandatory for teachers.

NEP 2020 proposes that the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) be responsible for setting standards for teacher education programs, accrediting teacher education institutions, and conducting research on teacher education.

NEP 2020 proposes establishing autonomous teacher education institutions, introducing a system of academic audit and accreditation, and encouraging public-private partnerships in teacher education. It does not propose allowing teacher education institutions to set their own curriculum.

The proposed National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education (NCFTE) under NEP 2020 focuses on content knowledge and pedagogy, learner-centered pedagogy, and assessment and evaluation.

NEP 2020 proposes introducing a national assessment system for teacher education programs, encouraging self-assessment and peer assessment in teacher education institutions, and using student feedback to evaluate teacher education programs. It does not propose allowing teacher education institutions to design their own assessment system.

The proposed National Institute for Teachers' Education (NITE) under NEP 2020 is responsible for developing a national curriculum for teacher education, providing training and support to teacher educators, and conducting research on teacher education.

NEP 2020 proposes increasing government funding for teacher education, encouraging private investment in teacher education, and introducing a system of scholarships and financial aid for teacher education students. It does not propose allowing teacher education institutions to charge higher fees.
