Climate Justice and Environmental Racism

Environmental Racism refers to the systemic and intentional placement of hazardous facilities, waste sites, and polluting industries in or near minority and low-income communities, resulting in disproportionate environmental burdens and health risks.

Detroit, Michigan, has been referred to as the 'Asthma Capital' due to its alarmingly high rates of childhood asthma, which are significantly higher than the national average. This is largely attributed to the city's history of industrial pollution and lack of green spaces.

A 'sacrifice zone' refers to a community that has been burdened with environmental hazards, such as toxic waste dumps, polluting industries, or major transportation corridors, often due to historical patterns of discrimination and neglect.

Climate Injustice refers to the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities, who often have fewer resources and less capacity to adapt to its effects. This includes communities of color, low-income communities, and indigenous communities, among others.
