Indira Gandhi became the first woman Prime Minister of India in 1966 and served from 1966-1977 and again from 1980-1984. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first PM, and became one of India's most influential political leaders. Pratibha Patil was President, not Prime Minister.
