Indian History: Ancient to Independence Era

Swami Vivekananda made this statement urging Indians to focus on serving Mother India for fifty years. It reflects his vision of nationalism combined with spiritual devotion to the nation. Raja Rammohan Roy focused on social reform, Lord Wellesley was a British Governor-General, and Dadabhai Naoroji was an economic critic of British rule.

The historic Poorna Swaraj resolution demanding complete independence from British rule was passed at the Lahore session in December 1929. This led to the first observance of Independence Day on January 26, 1930. The 1919 date marks the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Delhi hosted important sessions but not this resolution, and Buxar is a 1764 battle site.

Gopal Hari Deshmukh, a 19th-century Marathi social reformer, earned the title Lokahitavadi (well-wisher of the people) for his writings advocating social reform. Gandhi, Nehru, and Bose were 20th-century leaders with different titles and contributions to the freedom movement.

Dadabhai Naoroji established the East India Association in London in 1866 as a platform to discuss Indian political issues and present grievances to the British government. Bipin Chandra Pal was a later nationalist leader, Lord Wellesley was a British Governor-General, and Krishna Deva Raya was a 16th-century Vijayanagara emperor.

The Simon Commission, arriving in 1928 with no Indian members, triggered nationwide protests marked by the first all-India hartal on October 30. The Chaura Chauri incident (1922) led to Gandhi suspending Non-Cooperation, the 1919 Act provoked protests but no nationwide hartal, and Poorna Swaraj (1929) led to Civil Disobedience later.

Ramanuja, the influential Vaishnavite philosopher, taught at the Srirangam temple in Tamil Nadu. Srirangam is one of the most important Vaishnavite pilgrimage sites and served as a major center for Ramanuja's theological teachings and Visishtadvaita philosophy propagation.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah joined the Home Rule League founded by Annie Besant in 1916, demonstrating his earlier collaboration with Congress-aligned movements before his eventual shift toward separate Muslim political representation. This participation shows his political evolution in the pre-partition era.

Alara Kalama was a renowned meditation teacher who taught Prince Siddhartha (the Buddha) during his spiritual quest before enlightenment. He specialized in the meditation technique focusing on the sphere of nothingness (akincannayatana). Buddha studied under him but found that this teaching did not lead to final liberation.
