Renaissance Art History: Leonardo da Vinci

The three giants of the High Renaissance are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Caravaggio (1571-1610) was a Baroque painter who came later, in the late 16th and early 17th century, after the High Renaissance period had ended. He's known for his dramatic use of chiaroscuro (light and shadow).

'da Vinci' literally means 'from Vinci' in Italian. Leonardo was born in the town of Vinci in Tuscany, Italy. So 'Leonardo da Vinci' means 'Leonardo from Vinci', identifying his place of origin. This was a common naming convention in Renaissance Italy.

Leonardo da Vinci painted 'John the Baptist' in the early 16th century. It depicts John the Baptist in solitude, with a pointing gesture and enigmatic smile characteristic of da Vinci's later works. 'Madonna of the Meadow' is by Raphael, 'Boy Bitten by a Lizard' is by Caravaggio, and 'Creation of Adam' is Michelangelo's famous Sistine Chapel fresco.

Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Vitruvian Man' is NOT engraved on American coins. The drawing depicts a man in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart, inscribed in a circle and square. It is a Renaissance artwork exploring human proportions based on Vitruvius's writings. It has never appeared on American currency - the false statement makes this 'False' the correct answer.

Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, a town in Austria-Hungary (present-day Austria). Though he later rose to power in Germany, he was Austrian by birth.
