Sole custody grants one parent the exclusive right to make decisions about the child's upbringing. Joint custody involves both parents sharing the decision-making responsibilities. Child support is a legal obligation of a parent to provide financial assistance for the upbringing of their child. Its primary purpose is to ensure that the child has access to basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, and education.

Irreconcilable differences, adultery, and cruelty are all common grounds for divorce in many jurisdictions. Irreconcilable differences refer to a situation where the spouses have irreconcilable differences that make it impossible for them to continue living together as a married couple. Adultery is the act of sexual intercourse with someone other than one's spouse. Cruelty refers to physical or emotional abuse by one spouse towards the other.

Adoption is the legal process by which a person assumes the parental rights and responsibilities for a child who is not their biological child. It involves the termination of the child's legal relationship with their biological parents and the establishment of a new legal relationship with the adoptive parents.

Domestic violence encompasses a wide range of abusive behaviors that occur within a family or intimate relationship. It includes physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and financial abuse. Physical abuse involves the use of physical force to cause harm or injury to another person. Emotional abuse involves the use of words or actions to cause emotional distress or harm to another person. Sexual abuse involves any form of unwanted sexual contact or activity. Financial abuse involves the use of financial control or manipulation to exert power over another person.

A prenuptial agreement is a legal contract entered into by a couple before marriage. Its primary purpose is to protect the financial interests of both spouses in the event of a divorce. It can specify how property and assets will be divided, as well as address issues such as spousal support and child custody.

There are various types of family structures, including the nuclear family, extended family, single-parent family, blended family, and adoptive family. The nuclear family consists of a husband, wife, and their children. The extended family includes the nuclear family as well as other relatives such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. A single-parent family consists of a parent and their children without the other parent present. A blended family is formed when two families merge, typically through remarriage, resulting in a household with children from both previous relationships. An adoptive family is one in which a child is legally adopted by parents who are not their biological parents.

Name change, legal name change, and identity change are all terms used to refer to the legal process of changing one's name. It involves submitting a petition to the court and providing a valid reason for the name change. Once the petition is approved, the person's name is officially changed and they are issued a new birth certificate and other legal documents with the new name.

Mediation, arbitration, and conciliation are all types of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). ADR is a process in which a neutral third party helps disputing parties reach an agreement without going to court. Mediation involves a neutral mediator facilitating a discussion between the parties to help them find a mutually acceptable solution. Arbitration involves a neutral arbitrator hearing evidence from both parties and making a binding decision. Conciliation involves a neutral conciliator helping the parties negotiate and reach an agreement.

Social policy in relation to families aims to promote the well-being of families, reduce poverty and inequality among families, support families in times of crisis, and address issues that affect families, such as child care, education, and housing.

Family court, juvenile court, and domestic relations court are all types of courts that handle legal matters related to families. Family courts deal with issues such as divorce, child custody, and support. Juvenile courts handle cases involving minors who have committed crimes or are in need of protection. Domestic relations courts handle a wide range of family-related matters, including divorce, child custody, support, and domestic violence.

Legal separation is the legal process of ending a marriage without dissolving it. It involves a court order that legally separates the spouses but does not terminate the marriage. This allows the spouses to live separately, divide their property and debts, and make decisions about their children, while still remaining legally married.

Psychological evaluation, home study, and social study are all types of child custody evaluations. A psychological evaluation assesses the mental health and emotional well-being of the child and the parents. A home study evaluates the home environment and the parenting skills of the parents. A social study evaluates the child's social and emotional development, as well as the family's social and economic circumstances.
