Indian History: Jagannath Temple & Independence Era

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw (popularly known as Sam Bahadur) was the General of the Indian Army during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. His brilliant military leadership led to the decisive victory and the creation of Bangladesh.

Mohammed Ali Jinnah served as the first Governor General of independent Pakistan from August 1947 until his death in September 1948. He was also Pakistan's founding father and its first Governor General.

Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan (1890-1988) was a Pashtun independence activist and founder of the Khudai Khidmatgaran ('Servants of God') movement. He was called 'Frontier Gandhi' because, like Mahatma Gandhi, he advocated for non-violent resistance and was based in the North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan). Maulana Azad, Zakir Hussain, and Shah Nawaz Khan were prominent leaders but not associated with this nickname.

Bhagat Singh, along with Shivaram Rajguru, assassinated British police officer J.P. Saunders in Lahore on December 17, 1928, to avenge the death of nationalist leader Lala Lajpat Rai. This was part of the Lahore Conspiracy Case. At the time, Lahore was part of British India; after partition in 1947, it became part of Pakistan. Karachi, Attari, and Islamabad are incorrect locations for this historical event.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah's dream house, called 'South Court,' was built on Malabar Hill in Mumbai. This was his residence from 1940 until 1947, when he left for Pakistan after partition. The property remains a subject of India-Pakistan diplomatic discussion. Cuffe Parade, Valkeshwar (likely misspelled of Walkeshwar), and Colaba are other Mumbai areas but not the correct location of Jinnah's house.

The Jagannath Temple in Puri stands approximately 65 meters tall, making it one of the tallest monuments in Odisha. The 120-meter and 70-meter options are significantly exaggerated, while 45 meters is too short for this major temple complex.

The Jagannath Temple was built in the 12th century AD (around 1161). Construction began under King Chodaganga Dev of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. The 10th, 14th, and 16th centuries are incorrect as they don't align with the historical record.

The Jagannath Temple is located in Puri, Odisha, on the eastern coast of India. Bhubaneswar is the capital city of Odisha but not the temple's location. Cuttack and Paradip are other Odisha cities but don't house this famous temple.

King Chodaganga Dev of the Eastern Ganga dynasty initiated the construction of the Jagannath Temple in the 12th century. Anangabhima Dev completed it later, while Kapilendra Dev ruled much later in the 15th century.

Anangabhima Dev completed the construction of the Jagannath Temple. While Chodaganga Dev started it, the completion occurred under Anangabhima Dev's rule. Pratap Rudra Dev and Kapilendra Dev were later rulers of the Ganga dynasty.

The Jagannath Temple complex has four main entrances (Singhadwara, Ashwadwara, Vyagradwara, and Hadidwara) representing the four cardinal directions, which is traditional in Hindu temple architecture. Six, seven, and ten are incorrect numbers.

Singhadwara (Lion Gate) is the main entrance of the Jagannath Temple, located on the eastern side. The name Singhadwara comes from the two lion statues guarding this entrance. Sankhadwara, Swargadwara, and Martyadwar are other entrances but not the main one.

Bada Danda (Grand Road) is the name of the grand road in front of the Jagannath Temple. This road is used during the Rath Yatra festival when deities are taken to the Gundicha Temple. The name comes from the local Odia language meaning grand road.

Baisi Pahacha (meaning 22 steps) is the flight of steps leading to the Jagannath Temple. Devotees climb these 22 steps while praying to their ancestors. It is believed to be the path to heaven or salvation.

The pillar in front of the Jagannath Temple at Puri is called Aruna Stambha. It was originally located at the Sun Temple, Konark. Garuda is the mount of Vishnu, but this pillar is dedicated to Aruna, the charioteer of the sun god.

The temple complex is called Bedha and its area is approximately 400,000 square feet. Bedha refers to the temple boundary or enclosure wall area.
