The 1911 race to the South Pole was between Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and British Royal Navy officer Robert Falcon Scott. Amundsen reached the pole on December 14, 1911, winning the race. Scott's expedition arrived five weeks later on January 17, 1912, but tragically perished during the return journey.

Richard Byrd graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1912 and became a pioneering aviator. In 1926, he made the first flight over the North Pole and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for this achievement. Byrd went on to become a famous polar explorer, leading multiple expeditions to Antarctica.

Edmund Hillary, a New Zealand mountaineer, became one of the first two people to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, alongside Tenzing Norgay. In 1958, he reached the South Pole as part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, making him the first person to reach both the Everest summit and the South Pole.

Christopher Columbus sailed west in 1492 hoping to reach Asia by a new route. Instead, he landed in the Bahamas, unknowingly encountering the Western Hemisphere. He died believing he had found islands off the coast of Asia, never realizing he had discovered continents previously unknown to Europeans.

Amerigo Vespucci was the first European to explicitly recognize that the lands encountered by Columbus were part of a previously unknown continent, not Asia. In 1507, cartographer Martin Waldseemuller named the continent 'America' in Vespucci's honor, recognizing his 'New World' insight. Unlike Columbus, Vespucci understood these lands were separate from Asia.

Hiram Bingham III, a history lecturer at Yale University, rediscovered the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in 1911. Pioneer 10, launched in 1972, was the first spacecraft to travel beyond the orbit of Pluto and leave the known solar system. It crossed Neptune's orbit in 1983 and continued into interstellar space. Voyager 1 and 2 also eventually left the solar system, but Pioneer 10 was the first to pass the outer boundaries.

Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition that successfully circumnavigated the globe, from 1519 to 1522. Though Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines in 1521, his fleet continued under Juan Sebastian Elcano, completing the circumnavigation. This proved the Earth could be circled by sea and opened global trade routes.

Ferdinand Magellan named the Pacific Ocean ('Mar Pacifico' meaning peaceful sea) in 1520 after sailing through the dangerous Strait of Magellan and encountering calm waters. The name contrasted sharply with the stormy Atlantic he had just crossed. Though Magellan didn't complete the circumnavigation, this naming was his contribution.

Bartolomeu Dias was the first European to round the southern tip of Africa (Cape of Good Hope) in 1488, opening the sea route to the Indian Ocean. This proved that Africa could be circumnavigated by sea. Vasco da Gama later used this route to reach India in 1497-1498, completing the sea route to the East Indies.

Following Dias's earlier route around the cape, da Gama reached Calicut, India in 1498, establishing the direct sea route from Europe to Asia that Portugal had sought. Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan disappeared in 1937 while attempting to fly around the world. Their aircraft was a Lockheed Electra 10E, a twin-engine monoplane. The Kinner Airstar was Earhart's earlier training aircraft, while the Lockheed Vega was used in her transatlantic solo flight.

Robert Peary and Matthew Henson are credited with reaching the North Pole on April 6, 1909. Lewis and Clark explored the American West, while Livingstone and Stanley were famous for African exploration. Burton and Speke also explored Africa, seeking the source of the Nile.

Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin was the Lunar Module pilot and second man to walk on the Moon, while Michael Collins was the Command Module pilot who remained in lunar orbit. Lovell and Swigert flew on Apollo 13, Young and Mattingly on Apollo 16, and Shepard and Mitchell on Apollo 14.
