India: National Symbols & Heritage

Sripuram Golden Temple is located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, and is a major spiritual complex with a golden temple structure dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi Narayani. It's distinct from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The other options are different cities in South India.

The Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur has a unique architectural design where the shadow of its tower (vimana/gopuram) never falls on the ground. This is due to its specific height and angle. Trichy, Madurai, and Srirangam have famous temples but don't have this specific shadow characteristic.

Sri Krishna Devaraya was the most famous ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire (reigned 1509-1529). The Hoysala, Chalukya, and Chola dynasties were powerful South Indian kingdoms but preceded Vijayanagara. Krishna Devaraya is known for his patronage of arts and literature.

Kanipakkam (near Chennai) is famous for the Varasiddhi Vinayakaswamy Temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha. It's one of the important Ganesha temples in Tamil Nadu. Shiva, Lakshmi, and Vigneswara (another name for Ganesha) are different deities - Vigneswara is essentially Ganesha but the answer is Ganesha.

The Chilkuru Balaji Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Hyderabad is popularly called the 'Visa Temple' because devotees believe praying here helps them get visas to travel abroad. It's especially popular among students and professionals seeking foreign visas. Ganesha, Saibaba, and Vigneswara temples don't have this specific nickname.

The Indian national flag, called the Tiranga, consists of three horizontal stripes of saffron, white, and green with the Ashoka Chakra (navy blue wheel) in the center. The three colors represent courage and sacrifice, peace and truth, and faith and chivalry respectively.

The National Emblem of India features four lions standing back to back, taken from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. Only three lions are visible in the official emblem, which appears on all official government documents, currency, and passports.

'Jana Gana Mana' is India's national anthem, composed by Rabindranath Tagore in 1911. It was officially adopted in 1950 and takes approximately 52 seconds to sing. The anthem praises the diversity and geography of India.

The Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) was declared India's national animal in 1973, replacing the lion. Found primarily in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, this majestic subspecies represents India's commitment to wildlife conservation.

The Indian Peafowl, commonly known as the peacock, was declared India's national bird in 1963. The male bird is famous for its iridescent blue plumage and spectacular tail feathers used in courtship displays. It's native to the Indian subcontinent.

The Ganges River Dolphin (Platanista gangetica) was declared India's national aquatic animal in 2010 to raise awareness about its endangered status. This freshwater dolphin is found primarily in the Ganges and Brahmaputra river systems and is nearly blind, using echolocation to navigate.

The Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) was declared India's national flower in 1950. This aquatic plant holds deep cultural and religious significance in Hinduism and Buddhism, symbolizing purity, beauty, and spiritual enlightenment despite growing in muddy waters.

The Banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) was declared India's national tree in 1950. Known for its aerial roots that grow downward to form new trunks, a single banyan tree can spread over several acres and live for hundreds of years, often serving as community gathering places.

The Mango (Mangifera indica) was declared India's national fruit in 1950. India is the world's largest mango producer, growing over 100 varieties. This fruit has been cultivated in the Indian subcontinent for over 4,000 years and is often called the 'king of fruits.'

Field hockey is widely recognized as India's national sport, though it's not officially designated by the government. India has a strong hockey legacy with 8 Olympic gold medals. Cricket, while extremely popular, is not the national sport.

The Ganges (Ganga) was declared India's national river in 2008 due to its cultural and religious significance. It is the most sacred river in Hinduism and supports millions of people. The Yamuna and Cauvery are important rivers but not the national river.

Varanasi (also called Benares or Kashi) is known as the 'City of Light' in Sanskrit due to its spiritual significance as a major pilgrimage site. It's one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and central to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Shimla, Jammu, and Hyderabad are important cities but not called 'Luminous city'.

Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is known as the 'City of Palaces' due to its numerous grand colonial-era buildings and palatial mansions built during the British Raj. It was India's capital until 1911. Delhi has palaces but is better known as the capital, Hyderabad has the Charminar, and Jaipur is the Pink City.

Jaipur is called the 'Pink City' because its old city was painted pink in 1876 to welcome Prince Albert (Queen Victoria's consort), and the color has been maintained since. The pink color represents hospitality in Rajasthani culture. Chennai, Secunderabad, and Hyderabad are major cities but not associated with the color pink.
