Field hockey is officially recognized as India's national sport. India has a rich hockey history, with 8 Olympic gold medals. While cricket is extremely popular in India, it is not the designated national sport. Similarly, football and table tennis, though played, are not national sports.

Goa was the first Portuguese territorial colony in India, conquered by Afonso de Albuquerque in 1510 and serving as the headquarters of the Portuguese Estado da Índia. While Kochi had an earlier Portuguese factory (1500), Goa was their first proper colonial possession and administrative center.

Jamshedpur is called Tatanagar because it was founded by Jamsetji Tata and houses Tata Steel, India's first iron and steel plant. The city was named after Jamsetji Tata, and 'Tatanagar' literally means 'Tata city'.

Varanasi, one of the oldest living cities in the world, is also called Benares (or Banaras). This ancient city on the banks of the Ganges is also known as Kashi. The name 'Benares' comes from the Sanskrit 'Varanasi' and was widely used during British colonial times.

Takshashila University (also known as Taxila), located in present-day Pakistan but historically part of ancient India, is widely considered the world's first university. It dates back to at least the 5th century BCE and attracted scholars from across Asia, including Charaka and Chanakya.

The Banyan Tree (Ficus benghalensis) is the national tree of India, chosen for its longevity and deep-rooted cultural significance. It symbolizes immortality and has deep roots in Indian mythology and tradition. The Great Banyan in Kolkata is one of the largest trees in the world.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose coined and popularized the slogan 'Jai Hind' as a greeting for the Indian National Army (INA). It became a powerful nationalist slogan meaning 'Victory to India' and was later adopted as India's informal national greeting.

According to Hindu mythology and scriptures, Manu is considered the first man, the progenitor of humanity. Manu is said to be the first king and the author of Manusmriti. The concept is similar to Adam in Abrahamic religions.

P.T. Usha, one of India's greatest athletes, is nicknamed 'Payyoli Express' because she was born in Payyoli, Kerala. The nickname reflects her incredible speed on the track. She was known as the 'golden girl' of Indian athletics in the 1980s.

Nagpur is geographically closest to the center point of India, calculated as the 'zero-mile marker' of the country. The exact geographical center is near Khindsi Lakhni, but Nagpur is commonly referred to as India's geographic center and houses the Zero Mile Stone.

Kaziranga National Park in Assam is home to two-thirds of the world's great one-horned rhinoceros population, making it the park's flagship species. While elephants and tigers are also present, the rhinoceros is the most iconic and commonly associated animal with Kaziranga.

India gained independence on 15th August 1947 after nearly 200 years of British rule. 26th January 1950 is when India's Constitution came into effect (Republic Day), and 1946 is incorrect as independence hadn't occurred yet.

India has 28 states. This number has changed over time due to reorganization of states, with Telangana being the most recent addition in 2014. Options A (20), B (23), and D (35) do not reflect the current number.

The River Dolphin (specifically the Ganges River Dolphin) is India's National Aquatic Animal, declared in 2009. Crocodiles, Katla Fish, and Green Frog are not designated as national aquatic animals.

Kuchipudi is a classical dance form originating from Andhra Pradesh. Mizoram and Nagaland have their own distinct folk dances, while Kerala is known for Kathakali and other dance forms, not Kuchipudi.

Fort William is located in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and serves as the headquarters of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army. Chennai, Goa, and Mysore do not house this historic fort.
