Ancient Indian Mathematicians and History

Bhaskaracharya (Bhaskara II, c. 1114-1185 CE) calculated the time taken for Earth to orbit the sun in his work Siddhanta Shiromani. His calculation of 365.2588 days was remarkably accurate for his era. The other options are either variations of his name or incorrect associations.

The Agra Fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573 as a military stronghold. Humayun ruled earlier, Jehangir (Akbar's son) ruled after Akbar, and Shah Jahan (Jehangir's son) later added structures but didn't build the original fort.

Muhammad bin Tughluq, the Delhi Sultanate ruler (1325-1351), famously shifted his capital from Delhi to Daulatabad (Devagiri) in 1327, though the decision was disastrous and he later returned to Delhi. Iltutmish ruled earlier, Akbar ruled much later as Mughal emperor, and Sher Shah Suri briefly interrupted Mughal rule but didn't make this capital shift.

The Treaty of Alinagar was signed in 1757 between the British East India Company and Siraj-ud-daulah, the Nawab of Bengal. The treaty restored favorable terms to the British after their capture of Calcutta. Mir Jafar later replaced Siraj-ud-daulah after the Battle of Plassey, while Shah Alam and Bahadur Shah Zafar were Mughal emperors from a different period.

Hiuen Tsang (also known as Xuanzang) visited India from 629-645 CE during the reign of Harshavardhana (606-647 CE). He spent years studying Buddhism at Nalanda and documented contemporary Indian society in his detailed travel accounts. Fa Hien visited during the earlier Gupta period, while I-Tsing came later.

Mahatma Gandhi organized the Indian Ambulance Corps in 1899 during the Second Boer War in South Africa. The corps of over 1,000 Indians provided medical support to the British, marking Gandhi's early organized leadership. Patel, Mehta, and Naoroji were prominent Indian leaders but not associated with this specific effort.

Mohammad bin Tughlaq (1325-1351 CE) is called the 'Mad Monarch' for his controversial and often impractical decisions, such as shifting the capital from Delhi to Daulatabad and introducing token currency. His schemes, while ambitious, caused widespread disruption. Akbar, Ashoka, and Hyder Ali were known for administrative competence.

The Gupta period (approximately 320-550 CE) is called the 'Golden Age' of ancient India for its remarkable achievements in arts, science, literature, and trade. Under rulers like Chandragupta II and Samudragupta, India saw great cultural flourishing. The Maurya and Mughal periods were significant but termed differently by historians.

Kandhar Fort in Nanded district, Maharashtra was built by the Rashtrakuta king Krishna III in the 10th century. The fort served as a strategic military outpost. Soan, Agra, and Chunar forts have different historical origins and builders.

Aryabhatta calculated the Earth's circumference as approximately 24,835 miles (or 4,967 yojanas in ancient Indian units), which is remarkably close to the modern value of 24,901 miles. This demonstrates the sophistication of ancient Indian astronomy and mathematics.

While Aryabhatta played a monumental role in the development of the decimal place-value system and the concept of zero, he was not the sole inventor of the numerical zero. The concept of zero as both a placeholder and a number evolved through earlier mathematical traditions in ancient India and other civilizations.

Aryabhatta was a pioneering astronomer and mathematician of classical Indian antiquity, but he was not the first person in the world to study astrology or astronomy. Ancient civilizations like the Babylonians, Egyptians, and Sumerians tracked celestial bodies long before him.
