Indian History and Scientific Contributions

Samudragupta earned the title 'Napoleon of India' from historian V. Smith due to his extensive military conquests across the Indian subcontinent. His campaigns, documented in the Allahabad Pillar inscription by his court poet Harishena, expanded Gupta rule from the Himalayas to the Deccan plateau. Neither Akbar (Mughal), Chandragupta I (Gupta founder), nor Ashoka (Mauryan) carries this specific epithet.

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish permanent settlements in India, arriving with Vasco da Gama in 1498 and capturing Goa in 1510 under Afonso de Albuquerque. The English arrived later at Surat in 1612, the French established Pondicherry in 1674, and the Dutch came around 1605 but settled primarily in the East Indies (modern Indonesia).

Chandragupta Maurya, with guidance from his mentor Chanakya (Kautilya), founded the Mauryan Empire around 321 BCE after overthrowing the Nanda dynasty. He went on to unify much of the Indian subcontinent. Kanishka and Ashoka ruled different empires (Kushan and later Mauryan respectively), while Chanakya was the advisor, not the founder.

The capital of British India was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911, announced by King George V at the Delhi Durbar. The move was completed in 1931 when New Delhi was officially inaugurated. 1935 marks the Government of India Act, 1900 is irrelevant, and 1929 relates to the Lahore Congress session.

India's first major civilization was the Indus Valley Civilization (c. 3300-1300 BCE), centered around the Indus River and its tributaries in present-day Pakistan and northwest India. Sites like Mohenjo-daro and Harappa flourished here. The Deccan, Ganges Plain, and Kashmir saw settled civilizations much later in historical periods.

The Third Battle of Panipat (1761) was fought between the Maratha Empire and the Afghan forces led by Ahmad Shah Durrani (Abdali). The Afghans won decisively, halting Maratha expansion in North India. The British were not yet a major power at Panipat, the Mughal Empire was in decline, and the Rajputs were not involved in this battle.

Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, began construction of the Qutb Minar in 1192. It was completed by his successor Iltutmish in 1220. Babur arrived much later (1526) to found the Mughal Empire, Humayun was a Mughal ruler, and the tower was already complete before their time.

Babur (Zahir-ud-din Muhammad Babur) founded the Mughal Empire in India after defeating Ibrahim Lodi at the First Battle of Panipat in 1526. Ibrahim Lodi was the last Delhi Sultanate ruler he defeated, Sher Shah founded the Sur Empire, and Akbar was Babur's grandson (the third Mughal ruler).

Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, with construction completed around 1653. Akbar built many monuments but not the Taj, Jahangir was Shah Jahan's father, and Aurangzeb (Shah Jahan's son) was known for austerity rather than grand architectural projects.

Masi was the traditional ink used in ancient India, made from soot, lampblack, and natural binders. It was widely used for writing manuscripts and documents on palm leaves and other materials.

Narinder Singh Kapany is widely recognized as the father of fiber optics for his pioneering research in the 1950s demonstrating light transmission through flexible glass fibers, which laid the foundation for modern fiber-optic communications.

The Great Bath at Mohenjodaro is one of the earliest known public water tanks, measuring about 12 meters by 7 meters with a depth of 2.4 meters. It demonstrates the advanced urban planning and engineering capabilities of the Indus Valley Civilization.

Ajay Bhatt, an Indian-American computer architect, co-invented the USB while working at Intel in the 1990s. USB revolutionized device connectivity by standardizing how peripherals connect to computers.

Aryabhatta, in his work Aryabhatiyam (499 CE), defined trigonometric functions including sine (jya), cosine (kojya), versine (utkrama-jya), and inverse sine. This preceded similar developments in Islamic and European mathematics by centuries.

Pingala, in his Chandahsutra (c. 2nd-3rd century BCE), described binary numbers using short (laghu) and long (guru) syllables to represent 0 and 1, essentially creating the binary numeral system over 1500 years before Leibniz formalized it.

The Simputer (Simple, Inexpensive, Multilingual Computer) was developed in 1999 by 7 scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IIS) Bangalore. It was designed as a low-cost computing device for rural India.

Yuktibhasa (c. 1530), written by Jyesthadeva of the Kerala school, is the first known calculus textbook. It contains detailed proofs and derivations of infinite series for pi, sine, cosine, and other calculus concepts predating Newton and Leibniz by over a century.

Madhava of Sangamagrama (c. 1350-1425), founder of the Kerala school, discovered the infinite series for pi (pi/4 = 1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + ...) around 1400, over 200 years before Leibniz published the same formula in 1673.

Jagdish Chandra Bose demonstrated millimeter-wave radio communication in 1895, using semiconductor junctions to detect radio waves. He publicly demonstrated transmission and reception of microwaves at Town Hall, Kolkata, predating Marconi's wireless demonstrations.

The earliest known buttons, dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization (c. 2800 BCE), were made from seashells. These were decorative ornaments rather than functional fasteners, which came later.
