Indian Independence Movement and Personalities

Lala Lajpat Rai, one of the Lal-Bal-Pal triumvirate of the Indian independence movement, founded the India Home Rule League of America in 1917 while in self-imposed exile. He went to the USA to gather international support for India's freedom struggle and promote awareness about British colonial rule.

Khudiram Bose, at the age of 16-18, became one of the youngest revolutionaries in the Indian independence movement. He threw a bomb at a carriage carrying British magistrate Kingsford in 1908, though it mistakenly killed two British women instead. He was arrested and hanged at age 18.

The Teddy Bear was named after President Theodore Roosevelt after a 1902 hunting trip where he refused to shoot a bear that had been cornered and tied up for him. A political cartoon depicting the incident inspired a Brooklyn candy shop owner to create stuffed toy bears called 'Teddy's Bears,' which became hugely popular. The name honors Roosevelt's sportsmanship and compassion, and the toy has remained a children's favorite ever since.
