Methods in Language and Cognition Research

EEG, fMRI, and eye-tracking are all commonly used methods for studying language comprehension. EEG measures brain activity, fMRI measures brain blood flow, and eye-tracking measures eye movements.

A priming task is a task in which a participant is presented with a word or phrase (the prime) and then asked to respond to a related word or phrase (the target). The purpose of a priming task is to measure the strength of association between the prime and the target.

Picture naming, sentence completion, and storytelling are all commonly used methods for studying language production. Picture naming is a task in which a participant is presented with a picture and asked to name the object in the picture. Sentence completion is a task in which a participant is presented with a sentence with one or more words missing and asked to fill in the missing words. Storytelling is a task in which a participant is asked to tell a story.

A flanker task is a task in which a participant is presented with a target stimulus flanked by one or more distractor stimuli. The purpose of a flanker task is to measure the influence of the distractor stimuli on the participant's attention to the target stimulus.

Free recall, cued recall, and recognition are all commonly used methods for studying memory. Free recall is a task in which a participant is asked to recall as many items as they can from a list of items. Cued recall is a task in which a participant is given a cue to help them recall an item from a list of items. Recognition is a task in which a participant is presented with a list of items and asked to indicate which items they have seen before.

A Stroop task is a task in which a participant is presented with a word that is printed in a different color than the word itself. The participant is asked to name the color of the word, not the word itself. The purpose of a Stroop task is to measure the influence of the word's meaning on the participant's ability to name the color of the word.

The ultimatum game, the prisoner's dilemma, and the Iowa Gambling Task are all commonly used methods for studying decision-making. The ultimatum game is a game in which one player proposes a division of a sum of money to another player. The other player can either accept the proposal or reject it. If the other player rejects the proposal, neither player receives any money. The prisoner's dilemma is a game in which two players are each given the choice of cooperating or defecting. If both players cooperate, they both receive a small reward. If one player cooperates and the other player defects, the defector receives a large reward and the cooperator receives nothing. If both players defect, they both receive a small punishment. The Iowa Gambling Task is a task in which participants are given the choice of drawing cards from four different decks. Two of the decks are advantageous, meaning that they contain more high-value cards than low-value cards. The other two decks are disadvantageous, meaning that they contain more low-value cards than high-value cards. The purpose of the Iowa Gambling Task is to measure participants' ability to learn which decks are advantageous and which decks are disadvantageous.

A go/no-go task is a task in which a participant is presented with a series of stimuli. The participant is instructed to respond to some of the stimuli (the go stimuli) and to withhold their response to other stimuli (the no-go stimuli). The purpose of a go/no-go task is to measure the participant's speed of processing and their ability to inhibit their response to the no-go stimuli.

The Implicit Association Test (IAT), the Social Priming Task, and the Ultimatum Game are all commonly used methods for studying social cognition. The IAT is a task in which participants are presented with pairs of words or images that are associated with different social groups. The participant is asked to categorize the words or images as quickly as possible. The IAT is used to measure implicit biases, which are unconscious associations between social groups and positive or negative attributes. The Social Priming Task is a task in which participants are presented with a word or image that is associated with a particular social group. The participant is then asked to perform a task that is related to the social group. The Social Priming Task is used to measure the influence of social stereotypes on behavior. A visual search task is a task in which a participant is presented with a display of objects and asked to find a target object. The purpose of a visual search task is to measure the participant's speed of processing and their ability to focus their attention on the target object.

The Tower of Hanoi, the Raven's Progressive Matrices, and the Water Jar Problem are all commonly used methods for studying problem-solving. The Tower of Hanoi is a puzzle in which a participant is given a set of disks of different sizes and asked to move the disks from one peg to another, following certain rules. The Raven's Progressive Matrices is a standardized test that is used to assess a person's ability to solve problems that require inductive reasoning. The Water Jar Problem is a puzzle in which a participant is given a set of jars of different sizes and asked to measure out a specific amount of water, following certain rules.
