Indian Culture: Languages and Bharatanatyam

Alarippu is the presentation of the Tala (rhythmic cycle) punctuated by simple syllables spoken by the dancer. It is the introductory item in a Bharatanatyam repertoire, where the dancer executes basic movements while reciting rhythmic syllables to demonstrate understanding of the tala. Shabdam incorporates expressive elements, Stuti is a prayer, and Thillana is a fast-paced finale.

According to Hindu philosophy, the entire universe is the dance of the supreme dancer Shiva (Nataraja).
