The Body and Consumption

Materialism is the belief that material possessions are the most important things in life and that they can bring happiness and fulfillment.

Appadurai argues that commodities have multiple dimensions of cultural significance, including their sign value (what they represent), exchange value (what they can be exchanged for), use value (what they can be used for), aesthetic value (how they look), and social value (how they are used in social interactions).
