National Skill Development Mission (NSDM)

The National Skill Development Mission (NSDM) was launched in 2014 by the Government of India to address the skill gap in the country and enhance the employability of the youth.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is the nodal Ministry responsible for the implementation of the National Skill Development Mission (NSDM).

The primary objective of NSDM is to enhance skill development and employability among the youth, thereby increasing their chances of finding jobs and contributing to the economic growth of the country.

NSDM encompasses a range of initiatives, including skill training programs, apprenticeship programs, entrepreneurship development programs, and various other schemes aimed at enhancing skill development and employability.

NSDM aims to train 40 million people by 2022, thereby creating a skilled workforce that can meet the demands of the industry and contribute to the economic growth of the country.

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), Skill India, and National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) are all flagship programs under NSDM that aim to enhance skill development and employability among the youth.

The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme has a duration of 2 years, during which time it provides skill training to eligible candidates.

Skill India aims to create a skilled workforce for the industry, promote entrepreneurship and self-employment, and improve the quality of vocational education and training, thereby enhancing the employability of the youth.

The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) aims to train 3 million apprentices by 2022, providing them with hands-on experience and skills that are relevant to the industry.

The National Policy on Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (2015) emphasizes Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), skill gap analysis, and the establishment of sector-specific skill councils as key components for enhancing skill development and employability.

The National Skill Development Agency (NSDA) plays a crucial role in NSDM by coordinating and overseeing its implementation, developing skill standards and curriculum, providing funding for skill training programs, and promoting skill development initiatives.

NSDM faces several challenges, including lack of awareness about skill development programs, inadequate infrastructure for skill training, and mismatch between skill training and industry requirements, which hinder its effectiveness in enhancing skill development and employability.

The private sector plays a significant role in NSDM by providing skill training to candidates, developing skill standards and curriculum, providing funding for skill training programs, and collaborating with the government to enhance skill development and employability.

NSDM aims to achieve several key outcomes, including increased employability of the youth, enhanced productivity and competitiveness of the workforce, reduced skill gap in the industry, and improved economic growth of the country.
