Kanchipuram is historically known as the 'City of Thousand Temples' due to its numerous temples dedicated to various deities. While Kumbakonam and Thanjavur also have many temples, Kanchipuram specifically earned this epithet. Madurai is known as the 'City of Festivals' or 'Thoonga Nagaram'.
