Mahabharata Epic Quiz

In the Mahabharata war, each elephant carried 7 warriors. This included the mahout (elephant driver) and 6 fighting warriors. The elephants were formidable war machines used by both Pandava and Kaurava armies.

Sanjaya was blessed with divine vision (divya drishti) by Sage Vyasa, enabling him to narrate the entire Kurukshetra war to blind King Dhritarashtra. He could see and hear everything happening on the battlefield remotely. Vidura, Kripacharya, and Bhalikha were important figures but did not have this specific ability.

When Dushasana molested Draupadi in the gambling hall, Bheemasena made a terrible vow to kill him and drink his blood. This was one of Bheemasena's most famous vows, and he fulfilled it brutally during the war. None of the other Pandavas (Arjuna, Sahadeva, or Nakula) made this specific vow.

In the Mahabharata epic, Yudhistra had a weakness for gambling, which led to the infamous dice game where he lost his kingdom, brothers, and wife. Gambling addiction was his primary flaw, despite being otherwise righteous and wise. This weakness ultimately triggered the Kurukshetra war.

Drona's father was the sage Bharadwaja (also spelled Bhardhwaja), one of the great rishis in Hindu tradition. Dronacharya inherited his knowledge of weapons and warfare from his father, which he later taught to the Pandava and Kaurava princes. Hiranyadhanu was actually Eklavya's father, while Parashurama was Drona's guru who taught him advanced military arts.

At the Rajasuya Yagna performed by Yudhisthira, Krishna was offered the first worship (agra-puja) as a mark of respect and honor. This was a significant diplomatic gesture acknowledging Krishna's supreme status. Balarama was Krishna's brother, Bhishma was the Kaurava patriarch, and Dhritarashtra was the blind king - none of whom received this honor before Krishna.

Varuna, the god of water and oceans, presented the divine bow Gandiva to Arjuna. This happened along with other celestial weapons when Agni needed to consume the Khandava forest. Arjuna received these gifts to protect Agni from Indra's wrath. While Indra was Arjuna's celestial father, Vayu was Bhima's father, and Agni was the fire god who received Arjuna's help.

Hiranyadhanu was Eklavya's father, a king of the Nishada tribe (hunter-warriors). Eklavya's exceptional skill in archery led Drona to demand his thumb as gurudakshina, preventing him from surpassing Arjuna. Drona was Eklavya's guru, Dhritarashtra was the Kaurava king, and Pandu was the Pandava father.

After being insulted by his childhood friend Drupada, who refused to acknowledge him as an equal, Drona went to Hastinapura. There he became the royal guru, teaching archery and warfare to both the Pandava and Kaurava princes. Indraprastha was the Pandavas' capital, Kishkindha was the monkey kingdom from Ramayana, and Panchala was Drupada's kingdom.

The name Bhishma means 'one of terrible oath' or 'the terrible one,' referring to the terrible vow of celibacy he took to ensure his father Shantanu could marry Satyavati. This vow earned him the name Bhishma Pitamama. The term reflects the severity and irrevocability of his pledge, not anger or value.

After the Kurukshetra war, Yudhishthira performed the Ashwamedha Yagna (horse sacrifice) to assert his imperial sovereignty over all kingdoms. This ancient ritual involved releasing a sacrificial horse that wandered freely for a year, with Arjuna following it to conquer any land that challenged the horse. Rajasuya was performed before the war, while Maharudra is not a major Vedic yagna.

Ved Vyasa (Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa) composed the Mahabharata and initially recited it. He is credited with compiling not just the Mahabharata but also the Vedas. Ganesha served as the scribe who wrote down Vyasa's dictation. Valmiki composed the Ramayana, while Krishna was a key character and narrator of the Bhagavad Gita within the Mahabharata.

Bhishma chose Uttarayan (the northward movement of the sun) as the time for his death. Waiting for this auspicious period, he lay on a bed of arrows for 58 days after the war. Uttarayan is considered sacred in Hindu tradition, believed to be spiritually favorable for liberation. The other options are not related to this context.

When Duryodhana and Arjuna both approached Krishna for help before the Kurukshetra war, Krishna gave them a choice: either his personal support (without fighting) or his powerful Narayani Sena (army). Duryodhana chose the army, while Arjuna chose Krishna himself as his charioteer. This strategic choice proved decisive in the war.
