The Malwa Sultanate

Dilawar Khan Ghuri, a former governor of Delhi under the Tughluq dynasty, established the Malwa Sultanate in 1392.

Mandu, located in present-day Madhya Pradesh, was the capital of the Malwa Sultanate from its foundation until its fall in 1562.

The Ghurid dynasty, founded by Dilawar Khan Ghuri, ruled the Malwa Sultanate for over a century, from 1392 to 1505.

Hoshang Shah, who ruled from 1405 to 1435, is considered the most famous ruler of the Malwa Sultanate. He was known for his military conquests, architectural achievements, and patronage of the arts.

Mahmud Khalji, who ruled from 1436 to 1469, was a renowned patron of the arts and literature. He commissioned the construction of several mosques, palaces, and gardens, and also supported poets, musicians, and scholars.

Taxes, particularly land revenue and customs duties, were the primary source of revenue for the Malwa Sultanate. Agriculture and trade also contributed to the economy.

Ghiyasuddin Khilji, who ruled from 1469 to 1500, was a skilled military leader who expanded the boundaries of the Malwa Sultanate through conquests and strategic alliances.

The Malwa Sultanate came to an end in 1562 when it was conquered by the Mughal emperor Akbar, marking the beginning of Mughal rule in the region.

Mahmud Khalji implemented administrative reforms, reorganized the bureaucracy, and introduced a system of land revenue collection that contributed to the stability and prosperity of the Malwa Sultanate.

The Malwa Sultanate generally pursued a policy of religious tolerance, allowing Hindus and Jains to practice their faiths freely and even appointing non-Muslims to high positions in the administration.

Hoshang Shah was a great patron of architecture and is credited with the construction of several magnificent structures, including the Jami Masjid in Mandu, which is considered one of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic architecture.

Mahmud Khalji was a great patron of poets and scholars, and his court was a hub of intellectual and literary activity. He commissioned the translation of several Sanskrit works into Persian and encouraged the development of a rich literary tradition in the Malwa Sultanate.
