Indian Mythology: Mahabharata and Ramayana

Kaikesi (also called Kaikashi), daughter of the demon king Sumali, was Ravana's mother. Mandodari was Ravana's principal wife, Surpanakha was his sister, and Kaikeyi was Dasharatha's queen from the Ramayana.

Pulastya, one of the Prajapatis (mind-born sons of Brahma) and a great sage, was Ravana's paternal grandfather. Vishrava (Pulastya's son) was Ravana's father, while Vashishtha and Valmiki were prominent sages unrelated to Ravana's direct ancestry.

Mandodari was Ravana's principal wife and the queen of Lanka in the Ramayana epic. She was renowned for her wisdom, beauty, and virtue, being the daughter of the demon Mayasura and the apsara Hema. Unlike the other options listed, Mandodari alone was Ravana's wife and queen.

Kubera and Ravana were half-brothers who shared the same father (sage Visrava) but had different mothers - Kubera's mother was Idavida while Ravana's was Kaikesi. Kubera was the original ruler of Lanka and the god of wealth before Ravana ousted him. Therefore, stating they were brothers (without the half- prefix) is technically false.

Mahiravana (or Mahiravan) was indeed Ravana's brother, appearing in later Ramayana versions like the Krittibasi Ramayana and Bengali folklore. He was a powerful sorcerer who ruled over Patala (the netherworld) and kidnapped Rama and Lakshmana, requiring Hanuman to rescue them. He was not a minister, son, or related to Mandodari.

Akshaya (also called Akshayakumara) was Ravana's eldest son who fought Hanuman during the latter's first visit to Lanka. When Hanuman was creating havoc in the Ashoka Vatika after being discovered by the guards, Akshaya confronted him and was killed in the ensuing battle. The other options (Kumbhakarna, Angadha, Jambhavan) were not Ravana's sons.

Indrajit (also called Meghanada) was Ravana's eldest son, born to his wife Mandodari. He was a powerful warrior who conquered Indra and earned the title 'Indrajit' (conqueror of Indra). He was not Ravana's brother (those were Vibhishana, Kumbhakarna, and others), nor related to Mandodari as a brother or Vibhishana's son.

When Ravana offended Shiva by lifting Mount Kailasa, he was trapped beneath it. To appease Shiva, he tore out nerves from his own arm/hand to create strings and improvised a veena, singing praises of Shiva. This act of devotion pleased Shiva, who forgave him and gifted him the sword Chandrahas. The other options suggest instruments he did not use in this legend.

In the Ramayana, Vali (Vaali) had previously defeated Ravana in battle when Ravana attempted to interfere in Vali's affairs. This victory established Vali's superiority, which is why Ravana later formed a strategic alliance with Vali against Rama. Ravana was not defeated by Sugriva, Hanuman, or Kubera in direct combat.

After Ravana's death in the Ramayana war, Lord Rama himself performed the last rites and funeral ceremonies, honoring Ravana as a Brahmin and scholar despite being his enemy. Vibhishana (Ravana's righteous brother) had already defected to Rama's side, but it was Rama who ensured proper funeral rites were performed. Mandodari and Indrajit were deceased or not the performers of the rites.

Ravana was a direct descendant of Lord Brahma, being the grandson of Brahma's son Pulastya (sage Pulastya). His father was the sage Visrava (Visravas), making him part of a distinguished Brahminical lineage despite his demon king status. This Brahmin heritage is why Rama performed his last rites - Ravana was a Brahmin by birth.

Surpanakha (also called Shurpanakha) was Ravana's sister, daughter of sage Visrava and Kaikesi. She played a crucial role in the Ramayana by her attempted assault on Lakshmana and Sita, which led to her nose being cut off and triggered Ravana's abduction of Sita. The other options (Surasa, Lankini, Thadaka) were not Ravana's sisters.

Vibhishana was Ravana's younger brother, not Ravana's father's brother. They shared the same father (sage Visrava) but had different mothers, making them half-brothers. Ravana's father (Visrava) also had other sons including Kubera (from a different mother), but Vibhishana was not an uncle to Ravana.

Ved Vyasa is traditionally credited as the author of the Mahabharata, one of ancient India's two major Sanskrit epics. He composed this monumental work around 400 BCE-400 CE, containing over 100,000 shlokas (couplets). Kalidas was a classical Sanskrit poet and playwright (famous for works like Shakuntala and Meghaduta), while Valmiki wrote the Ramayana, and Sushruta was an ancient Indian physician known for the Sushruta Samhita on medicine and surgery.

In the Mahabharata, Ganga is the mother of Bhishma (born as Devavrata). She married King Shantanu of Hastinapur and bore him Bhishma, but later left him. When Bhishma lay on a bed of arrows after the Kurukshetra war, he revealed this story to the Pandavas. Jamuna (Yamuna) is associated with Krishna, Saraswati is the goddess of learning, and Durga is a principal form of the goddess.

Sanjay was the divine charioteer and narrator who described the Kurukshetra war to the blind King Dhritarashtra. Blessed with divine vision (divya drishti) by Ved Vyasa, he could see events occurring on the battlefield from afar and narrated them in real-time. This narration forms the basis of the Bhagavad Gita within the Mahabharata. Balaram was Krishna's brother, Ved Vyasa was the author, and Vidur was the wise half-brother of Dhritarashtra.

Arjuna's father was Indra, the king of the gods. According to the Mahabharata, Kunti invoked Indra through a mantra and bore Arjuna as his son, making him a demigod. Pandu was Arjuna's earthly father (Kunti's husband), but he died early. Pawan (Vayu) was the father of Bhima, and Yudhishthira (Dharmraj) was Arjuna's elder brother, not his father.

Lord Krishna ruled over Dwarka (also spelled Dvarka), an ancient city in Gujarat, after leaving Mathura. He established this kingdom and made it his capital, where he ruled as a king. The city finds mention in the Mahabharata and is one of the seven holiest cities in Hinduism. Kashi (Varanasi) is associated with Shiva, Koshal was Ayodhya's kingdom (Rama's birthplace), and Brij (Mathura-Vrindavan region) was where Krishna spent his childhood but did not rule.

In the Mahabharata, Krishna killed Shishupal during Yudhishthira's Rajasuya consecration ceremony. Krishna had promised to forgive 100 of Shishupal's offenses, but when he committed his 101st offense by continuously disrupting the ceremony, Krishna killed him using his Sudarshana Chakra. Arjun, Bhim, and Karna were not involved in this incident.
