Gymnastics: Controversies and Achievements

Julianne McNamara, a Romanian-born American gymnast, was awarded the bronze medal in the all-around competition at the 1984 Olympics, but was later stripped of her medal after it was discovered that she was ineligible to compete for the United States.

Bela Karolyi, a Romanian-born American gymnastics coach, was accused of physical and emotional abuse of his athletes, including Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. He was later banned from coaching gymnastics in the United States.

McKayla Maroney, a former American gymnast, was the subject of the 2020 documentary "Athlete A", which exposed the sexual abuse scandal involving former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.
