World Culture: National Anthems and World Religions

Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, lived and taught in ancient India (and Nepal). Today, Buddhists represent a very small minority (less than 1%) of India's population, whereas they are majorities or significant minorities in Japan, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.

Zoroastrianism originated in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran) around the 6th century BC, founded by the prophet Zoroaster (Zarathustra). It became the state religion of the Persian Empire. Java, Arabia, and Madagascar are not associated with Zoroastrian origins.

Taoism (Daoism) originated and is most widely practiced in China, where it developed alongside Confucianism as one of the major philosophical and religious traditions. It emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao (the Way). Turkey, Thailand, and India are not associated with Taoist origins.

Voodoo (Vodou) is most strongly associated with Haiti, where it developed as a syncretic religion combining West African spiritual practices with Catholicism. It emerged during the colonial period and remains an important part of Haitian culture. Brazil has Candomble, Mexico has Catholicism with indigenous elements, and Panama is not known for Voodoo.

Huitzilopochtli, Tlaloc, Itzli, and Quetzalcoatl are all deities from the Aztec pantheon, worshiped by the Aztec civilization in central Mexico. The Incas (Peru), Maoris (New Zealand), and Mbuti (Congo) had completely different religious traditions and did not worship these specific gods. Quetzalcoatl the feathered serpent god is particularly iconic in Aztec mythology.

The Sanskrit word 'veda' literally means knowledge or wisdom. The four Vedas - Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, and Atharva Veda - are the foundational scriptures of Hinduism, containing hymns, rituals, and philosophical teachings. This question tests etymology within the context of ancient Indian religious texts.

Kartikeya (also called Murugan, Skanda, or Subramanya) rides the peacock named Paravani. The peacock symbolizes his ability to conquer ego and desires, as the peacock is said to kill and eat snakes (representing desires). Kartikeya is the elder son of Shiva, while Ganesha rides the mouse.

Indra, the king of devas, rides Airavata, a magnificent white elephant with multiple trunks. Airavata emerged from the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan). The elephant symbolizes royal power, wisdom, and strength.

Surya (the sun god) travels across the sky in a golden chariot drawn by seven white horses. These horses represent the seven colors of the rainbow, seven days of the week, or the seven chakras. The charioteer is Aruna, the dawn deity.

Kuber (the lord of wealth and treasurer of gods) is often depicted riding a human-shaped carriage or sometimes the Pushpaka vimana (flying chariot). The 'Man' option likely refers to his human carriers or attendants. He is the guardian of wealth and the north direction.

Jaipur is called the Pink City due to its distinctive terracotta-pink buildings. In 1876, Maharaja Ram Singh painted the entire city pink to welcome the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), as pink represented hospitality in Rajput culture. The color has been maintained since.

The Lotus is often referred to as the 'Queen of Indian Flowers' and is the national flower of India, symbolizing purity and divinity. While roses and jasmine are popular, they do not hold this specific traditional title.

The Dutch national anthem 'Wilhelmus' (Wilhelmus van Nassouwe) is unusual because it's written from the personal perspective of William of Orange, the leader of the Dutch revolt against Spain, rather than celebrating the country itself or its people in general. Most national anthems focus on collective national identity and patriotism.
