Samudra Manthan - The Churning of the Ocean

In Hindu mythology, the sage Durvasa was known for his short temper. When Indra disrespectfully received a garland from Durvasa and gave it to his elephant Airavata who trampled it, Durvasa cursed all devas to lose their immortality and strength, leading to the Samudra Manthan churning.

In the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean), the Asuras were led by King Bali (Mahabali). While Indra led the Devas on one side of Vasuki the serpent, Bali commanded the Asuras on the other side. Rahu and Ketu were also Asuras but were not their leaders - they are specifically known for the eclipse myth.

In the Samudra Manthan, the Asuras held the mouth/head end of Vasuki (the serpent used as the churning rope), while the Devas held the tail end. This was strategically assigned because the mouth end emitted more potent fumes and vapors during the churning process. Vishnu had suggested this arrangement to ensure the Asuras would bear the brunt of the toxic emissions.

Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod (chaskey) in the Samudra Manthan. According to Hindu mythology, when the Devas and Asuras needed to churn the cosmic ocean, they sought a suitable churning rod and Mount Mandara was chosen. Lord Vishnu, in his Kurma (tortoise) avatar, supported the mountain from below to prevent it from sinking into the ocean floor during the churning process.

In Hindu mythology, during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the Ocean of Milk), Vasuki the serpent king was used as the churning rope. Devas and asuras spun Vasuki around Mount Mandara to churn the ocean.

During Samudra Manthan, the deadly poison Halahala emerged from the churning ocean. Lord Shiva consumed it to save the universe, holding it in his throat which turned blue, earning him the name Neelkantha.

According to Hindu scriptures, 14 ratnas (treasures) emerged from the Samudra Manthan including Lakshmi, Kaustubha Gem, Uchchaihshravas (horse), Airavat (elephant), Kamadhenu (cow), and the nectar of immortality (amrit) among others.

Kumbh Mela is celebrated at four places (Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik) because drops of amrit (nectar of immortality) fell at these locations during the struggle between devas and asuras when the pot was being carried by Garuda.

To prevent asuras from obtaining the amrit, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini, a beautiful enchantress. She distributed the nectar only to the devas while charming the asuras with her dance and appearance.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva was so enchanted by Mohini's form that he asked Vishnu to take that form again. This led to the union and birth of Ayappa (also known as Hariharaputra, son of Vishnu and Shiva).

Uchchaihshravas, the divine seven-headed flying white horse, emerged from the Samudra Manthan and was claimed by King Bali, the powerful asura king who received significant treasures during the churning.

Airavat, the divine white elephant with four tusks, emerged from the Samudra Manthan and was claimed by Indra, the king of devas. Airavat became Indra's mount and symbol of royalty.
