Tribal Health Care Access: IHS and Self-Governance

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among AI/AN, accounting for more deaths than cancer, diabetes, and stroke combined.

All of the above are major barriers to accessing quality health care for tribal members. Lack of transportation makes it difficult for tribal members to get to appointments, cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings between patients and providers, and language barriers can make it difficult for tribal members to communicate with their providers.

The IHS is a federal agency that provides health care to AI/AN. It is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The Tribal Self-Governance Program allows tribes to contract with the IHS to provide health care to their members, receive direct funding from the IHS to provide health care to their members, and develop their own health care programs and services.
