Karnataka Temples and Indian Heritage

Hotte Paksha Rangaswami, a politician from Karnataka, held the Guinness World Record for contesting the maximum number of elections (over 300 elections). He was known for frequently contesting and losing elections as a form of protest. The other names listed (Jagadeesha Ullagaddi, Santosh Dandina, Gangappa Gowder) are not associated with this record.

The Halmidi inscription, dated to approximately 450 CE, is the oldest known inscription in the Kannada language. It was discovered in the Halmidi village of Hassan district, Karnataka. The Badami Chalukya and Aihole inscriptions came later (6th-7th century CE), while the Talakad inscriptions are also from later periods. This inscription is crucial evidence for the early development of Kannada script.

The 123-foot tall Lord Shiva statue at Murudeshwara, Karnataka is one of the tallest Shiva statues in the world and a major pilgrimage site. It was completed in 2002 and is famous for its scenic coastal location on the Arabian Sea. Mysore, Nanjangud, and Bangalore have important temples but not the tallest Shiva statue.

Brindavan Gardens in Mysore is a Mughal-style terraced garden inspired by the Shalimar Gardens in Srinagar, Kashmir. Built in 1932 below the Krishnaraja Sagar dam, it features symmetric design, terraced lawns, fountains, and waterfalls characteristic of Mughal garden architecture. Lalbagh, Chambal, and Cubbon Park have different architectural styles.

The Harihareshwara Temple at Harihar in Karnataka was consecrated in 1224 CE. This Hoysala era temple is dedicated to Harihara, a fusion of Vishnu and Shiva. The inscriptional evidence confirms the 1224 CE date during the reign of Hoysala king Vira Narasimha II. 1301 CE is too late for the original consecration.

The Navalinga Temple at Kuknur in Karnataka is a cluster of nine Hindu temples dedicated to Shiva. Built in the 9th century during the Rashtrakuta period, it features nine shrines arranged around a central hall. The name 'Navalinga' literally means 'nine Shiva lingas'. Nava Durga, Nava Mukunda, and Nava Narasimha are different temple names but not the correct cluster temple.

The Mahakuta group of temples in Bagalkot district, Karnataka, from the 6th century exhibit a fusion of northern Nagara and southern Dravidian architectural styles - truly pan-Indian forms. This early Chalukya site shows the synthesis of architectural traditions from across India before regional styles became more distinct. Murudeshwara, Biligiri, and Siddhesvara are from later periods or different contexts.

The Doddabasappa Temple at Dambal, Karnataka, features a unique 24-pointed star-shaped plan. Built in the 12th century during the Western Chalukya period, this stellate plan is created by recessed and projecting corners forming the star pattern. Shringeri, Kollur Mookambika, and Belur temples have different architectural plans - none have this distinctive 24-pointed star design.

The Kodava Hockey Festival is one of the world's largest field hockey tournaments, held annually in Karnataka's Kodagu (Coorg) district. It's organized by the Kodava community and features hundreds of teams competing over several weeks, making it a unique sporting event in India.
