Maternal and Child Health Policy

The National Maternal Health Mission (NMHM) was launched in 2005 with the primary goal of reducing maternal mortality and morbidity in India.

The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) provides free delivery services in public health institutions, cash assistance to pregnant women for institutional delivery, and transportation assistance to pregnant women for reaching health facilities. Postpartum care for mothers and newborns is not a component of the JSY.

The Government of India has set a target maternal mortality ratio (MMR) of 100 per 100,000 live births under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Promotion of breastfeeding and complementary feeding, supplementary nutrition programs for pregnant women and children, and micronutrient fortification of food products are strategies adopted by the Government of India to address the issue of child malnutrition. Immunization of children against preventable diseases is not a strategy specifically aimed at addressing child malnutrition.

The Universal Immunization Program (UIP) was launched by the Government of India in 1985 to provide free immunization services against preventable diseases to all children in the country.

The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program provides supplementary nutrition to children and pregnant women, promotes early childhood education and development, and provides immunization services to children. Health checkups and treatment of children are not provided under the ICDS program.

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) was launched by the Government of India in 2011 to provide financial assistance to pregnant women for the birth of their first child.

The Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) program includes early detection and treatment of birth defects, screening for nutritional deficiencies, and immunization against preventable diseases. Treatment of childhood illnesses is not a component of the RBSK program.

The Government of India has set a target infant mortality rate (IMR) of 28 per 1,000 live births under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Promotion of healthy diet and physical activity, tobacco control measures, and early detection and management of NCDs are key strategies adopted by the Government of India to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among children. Immunization against preventable diseases is not a specific strategy aimed at reducing the burden of NCDs.

The Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) was launched by the Government of India in 2013 to address the issue of adolescent health.

Provision of mental health services at primary healthcare centers, training of healthcare professionals in mental health, and promotion of mental health awareness and stigma reduction are key components of the National Mental Health Program (NMHP) in India. Development of mental health infrastructure is not a specific component of the NMHP.

The Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY) was launched by the Government of India in 2015 to provide financial assistance to pregnant women for the birth of their second child.

To improve access to healthcare services in rural areas, to reduce maternal and child mortality, and to promote family planning and reproductive health are key objectives of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in India. Strengthening the health system for communicable diseases is not a specific objective of the NRHM.

The National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) was launched by the Government of India in 2014 to address the issue of tobacco control.
