Indian Sports History

Milkha Singh, known as the Flying Sikh, won his first National title in the 400m race in 1957. This was the beginning of his legendary athletic career that culminated in a fourth-place finish at the 1960 Rome Olympics. The 1957 victory marked his emergence as a dominant force in Indian sprinting.

Kamaljit Sandhu became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games gold medal in the 400m run, achieving this feat at the 1974 Tehran Asian Games. P.T. Usha was a multiple Asian Games gold medalist but came later (1982, 1986). M.L. Valsamma won gold in the 400m hurdles, not the 400m run.

Ramanathan Krishnan was the first Indian to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon, achieving this feat in 1960. His son Ramesh Krishnan also had significant Wimbledon success but reached quarterfinals. Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati achieved success in doubles, not singles.

K.D. Yadav (Khashaba Dadasaheb Yadav) won India's first individual Olympic medal - a bronze in wrestling at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. Karnam Malleshwari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal (bronze in weightlifting, 2000). Milkha Singh and P.T. Usha are famous for finishing fourth at Olympics.

The inaugural Asian Games took place in New Delhi in 1951, making it the first time the event was held in the city. 1982 was also hosted by Delhi, but that was the ninth edition, not the first. The Asian Games Federation was formed in 1949, and Delhi was chosen as the first host city.

Lord's Cricket Ground in London is widely known as the 'Home of Cricket' due to its historical significance and being the headquarters of the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club). Eden Gardens, The Oval, and MCG are all famous grounds but don't hold this title.

Eden Gardens in Kolkata is often called the 'Lord's of the Sub-Continent' as it is India's most iconic cricket stadium, similar in stature to Lord's in England. Gaddafi Stadium (Karachi/Lahore) and R Premadasa (Colombo) are major grounds but don't have this nickname.
