State Government Structure

The Chief Minister is the head of the state government in India. He/she is the leader of the majority party in the state legislative assembly and is appointed by the Governor.

The Governor is the representative of the central government in a state. He/she is appointed by the President of India and is responsible for ensuring that the state government functions in accordance with the Constitution.

The legislative body of a state government is called the Legislative Assembly. It is composed of elected representatives from the state's constituencies.

The Legislative Council is a permanent body that reviews and approves the state budget. It also has the power to initiate legislation and to advise the Governor on matters of policy.

The state government and the central government share power in India. The state government is responsible for matters such as education, health, and agriculture, while the central government is responsible for matters such as defense, foreign policy, and finance.

The term of office of a Chief Minister is 5 years. He/she can be removed from office by a vote of no confidence in the Legislative Assembly.

The term of office of a Governor is 5 years. He/she can be removed from office by the President of India.

The term of office of a member of the Legislative Assembly is 5 years. He/she can be removed from office by a vote of no confidence in the Legislative Assembly.

The term of office of a member of the Legislative Council is 6 years. He/she can be removed from office by a vote of no confidence in the Legislative Council.

The High Court is the highest court in a state. It has the power to interpret the state constitution, to settle disputes between the state government and the central government, and to hear appeals from lower courts.

The State Public Service Commission is an independent body that conducts examinations for recruitment to state government jobs, advises the state government on matters of personnel policy, and investigates complaints of corruption against state government employees.

The State Election Commission is an independent body that conducts elections to the state legislature, delimits constituencies for state assembly elections, and resolves disputes related to state assembly elections.

The State Finance Commission is an independent body that recommends the distribution of financial resources between the state government and local governments, reviews the financial position of the state government, and suggests measures to improve the state government's financial management.

The State Planning Commission is an advisory body that formulates the state's five-year plans, monitors the implementation of the state's five-year plans, and evaluates the impact of the state's five-year plans.
