VLT Instruments and Capabilities

The VLT is located on Cerro Paranal, a mountain in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile.

The VLT is operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), an intergovernmental organization of European countries.

The VLT consists of four individual telescopes, each with a primary mirror diameter of 8.2 meters.

The combined light-collecting area of the VLT is 512 square meters, which is equivalent to the area of a tennis court.

The VLT can perform observations in visible light, infrared, and ultraviolet wavelengths.

The VLT has been used to make a number of important scientific discoveries, including the first direct image of an exoplanet, the most distant galaxy ever observed, and the first evidence of a supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy.
