Medical Education and Training in India: Accreditation Standards

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is the apex body responsible for regulating medical education and training in India. It was established in 2020 by the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.

The NMC has set minimum student assessment and evaluation requirements for medical colleges to be accredited, including a minimum of 2 internal assessments per semester, a minimum of 1 end-of-semester examination per semester, a minimum of 1 practical examination per semester, and a minimum of 1 viva voce examination per semester.

The process for accreditation of a medical college by the NMC involves the college submitting an application to the NMC, the NMC conducting an inspection of the college, the NMC granting accreditation to the college if it meets the standards, and the accreditation being valid for a period of 5 years.

Accreditation by the NMC provides a number of benefits for medical colleges, including increased recognition and reputation, improved student enrollment, increased research funding, and improved faculty recruitment and retention.

Not being accredited by the NMC can have serious consequences for a medical college, including the college not being able to admit new students, the college not being able to offer medical degrees, the college not being able to receive government funding, and the college not being able to participate in research projects.
