New Zealand played its first Test match against England in 1929-30 at Christchurch. The match was played at Lancaster Park from January 24-29, 1930. New Zealand became the fifth Test-playing nation. This marked the beginning of New Zealand's Test cricket history.

Sir Richard Hadlee made his Test debut for New Zealand in 1973 against Pakistan at Lahore. He played from 1973-1990, becoming one of the greatest fast bowlers in cricket history. Hadlee was the first bowler to take 400 Test wickets and was instrumental in putting New Zealand cricket on the map.
