Shogi Strategy and Tactics

The primary goal of Shogi is to checkmate the opponent's king, similar to chess.

The king is the most important piece in Shogi, as capturing it results in an immediate loss.

The king is the only piece that can move in any direction, but only one square at a time.

Promotion occurs when a player drops a captured piece onto an empty square, creating a new piece of higher rank.

Pawns can move forward two squares on their first move, but only one square thereafter.

A fork is a tactic where a player attacks two or more of the opponent's pieces simultaneously with a single move.

Tempo is a tactic where a player sacrifices a piece to gain a time advantage, allowing them to make more moves before the opponent.

Lances can move forward one square at a time, or diagonally forward one square to capture an opponent's piece, and can also promote to a gold general.

A pin is a tactic where a player moves a piece to block the opponent's piece from moving, forcing them to move another piece to protect it.

Gold generals can move in any direction, but only one square at a time, and can also promote to a gold general.
