Cybersecurity and National Security

Cybersecurity in national security focuses on protecting critical infrastructure, such as power grids, transportation systems, and government networks, from cyberattacks that could disrupt essential services or compromise national security.

The Information Technology Act, 2000 is the primary law in India that governs cybersecurity and information technology. It provides a legal framework for electronic transactions, digital signatures, and cybercrimes.

The National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC) is responsible for coordinating cybersecurity efforts across government agencies in India. The NCSC also works with international partners to enhance global cybersecurity cooperation.

The National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) is responsible for identifying and protecting critical information infrastructure in India. The NCIIPC also works with critical infrastructure operators to develop and implement cybersecurity measures.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) is responsible for responding to and mitigating cyberattacks in India. CERT-In also provides cybersecurity advisories and alerts, conducts cybersecurity research and development, and coordinates cybersecurity efforts with international partners.

The National Cyber Security Policy, 2013 provides a comprehensive framework for cybersecurity in India. It outlines the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders in cybersecurity, establishes mechanisms for international cooperation on cybersecurity, and promotes cybersecurity awareness and education among citizens.

The Cyber Surakshit Bharat initiative aims to enhance cybersecurity awareness and skills among citizens, promote the adoption of cybersecurity best practices by organizations, establish a secure and resilient cyberspace in India, and foster collaboration between government, industry, and academia in cybersecurity.

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, specifically addresses cyberterrorism in India. It empowers the government to take measures to prevent and combat unlawful activities, including cyberterrorism.

The National Cyber Security and Resilience Framework (NCSRF) provides guidance to organizations on cybersecurity risk management. It outlines cybersecurity best practices and standards, promotes collaboration between government and industry on cybersecurity, and enhances cybersecurity awareness and education among citizens.

The National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) is responsible for coordinating cybersecurity efforts across government agencies in India. The NSCS also works with international partners to enhance global cybersecurity cooperation.

The National Security Act, 1980 governs the interception of communications for national security purposes in India. It empowers the government to intercept communications in the interest of national security, public order, or the investigation of certain offenses.

The National Cyber Security Awareness Month aims to raise awareness about cybersecurity risks and best practices among citizens, organizations, and government agencies. It promotes the adoption of cybersecurity measures, enhances cybersecurity skills, and fosters collaboration between government, industry, and academia in cybersecurity.

The Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Act, 2018 specifically addresses the protection of critical information infrastructure in India. It provides a legal framework for the identification, protection, and recovery of critical information infrastructure from cyberattacks and other threats.
