Bahamani kingdom - class-IX

Hasan Gangu was the founder of Bahamani Kingdom. In 1347 AD, he established the Bahamani Kingdom. In the Bahamani Kingdom, the Sultans followed the feudal type of administration. The kingdom was divided into provinces called Tarafs. The Governor who controlled tarafs were called Tarafdar or Amir.

Hasan Gangu was the founder of Bahamani Kingdom. The Sultans in Bahamani kingdom followed a feudal type of administration. The Bahamani Sultans gave great attention to education. They encouraged learning of Persian and Arabic languages. 

Hasan Gangu established the Bahamani kingdom based in Gulberg in Northern Karnataka and assumed the title of Abu-i- Muzaffar Ala-ud-din Bahman Shah. He was also called Zafar Khan. Bahmani kingdom lasted for 180 years. Bahmani Sultanate was at its peak during the Prime Ministership of Gawan.

The building of General Post Office, Mumbai had been designed by John Begg in Indo- Saracenic style. The central dome of building strongly resembles with the Gol Gumbaz of Bijapur. The Wales Museum of Mumbai was also constructed in Indo-Sarsanic style.  The main elevation is crowned by dome that in its profile and sculpture detailing is reminiscent of and inspired by the sculptural forms of Bijapur Gol Gumbaz.

Gol Gumbaz is located in Bijapur. It was constructed by Adil Shah II. It is also known as the whispering gallery because when one whispers, the lingering echo of a whisper is heard in the opposite corner.

The Gol Gubaz is a tomb of Mohammad Adil Shah. The tomb is a giant cube topped with a hemispherical dome. Area of Gol Gumbaz is 18000 sq feet. Its dome has an external diameter of 43.2 meters. There are four towers attached to its four corners. Each tower has seven storeys. Each story has seven arched windows with a small dome at the top. 

Gol Gumbaz is situated in Bijapur. In Bijapur, it is called the whispering gallery because when one whispers, lingering echo of the whisper is heard in the opposite corner. It is the mausoleum of Adil Shah, the Sultan of Bijapur. Construction of the tomb was started in 1626 and was completed in 1656.

Gol Gumbaz is located in Bijapur. It was constructed by Adil Shah II. Its construction was started in 1626 AD and ended in 1656 AD. It was designed by an architect named Yaqut of Dabul. The architectural style of this Gumbaz is Deccan Indo- Islamic. In the Bahmani kingdom, the Majlis-e-Ilwith served as the council of ministers, functioning as a cabinet to assist the Sultan in administration.

Bahmani State had the parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh (Telangana) states under its rule. In the beginning, Kalaburagi and later Bidar were their capitals. Bahmani Empire was in northern part of the Krishna River and Vijayanagara Empire was in southern part of Krishna. Tajuddin Firoz Shah was the great Sultan in Bahmani dynasty. He was liberal, judicious and a believer of god. He made copies of Quran and edited it for his whole life. He was a writer, encouraged all languages and he was an expert in Geometry and Theology. He sheltered many philosophers, poets, artists and had honoured them. He established observatory in Daulathabad (Maharashtra). He propagated the beauty of his capital, Kalaburagi. He built a new city called Firozabada on the bank of Bhima River. He gifted many villages to a Sufi Saint, Bandenawaz who arrived to the kingdom during his period. He concentrated on the development of ports and as a result, foreign tourism was encouraged.

The Battle of Talikota, which led to the downfall of the Vijayanagara Empire, took place in 1565 A.D. between the Deccan Sultanates and the Vijayanagara forces.

In 1463 AD, Muhammad Shah III became the Sultan at the age of nine. Muhammad Gawan became the regent of infant ruler. Under Muhammad Gawan's leadership, the Bahamani kingdom became powerful. Muhammad Gawan defeated the rulers of Konkan, Orissa, Sangameshwar, and Vijaynagar.

He was a very wise scholar and a great administrator. He improved the administration, systematized finances, encouraged public education, brought the property to the state, encouraged trade and agriculture, disciplined the army and eliminated corruption. 

Muhammad bin Tughlaq was the Sultan of Delhi when he attempted to shift the capital to Daulatabad, which eventually led to the region becoming an independent kingdom.

The Bahamani dynasty ruled from 1347 to 1526 for almost 180 years.  In AD 1347 an independent Muslim State, the Bahamani kingdom was established in South India by Ala-Ud-Din Hasan Gangu by revolting against Delhi Sultanate. By the end of 15th century, the Bahamani rule was plagued with fights and ended with the disintegration of Bahamani Kingdom into 5 states.

Daultabad was made the capital of Delhi Sultanate from 1327 CE to 1335 CE and renamed it as Daultabad in 1330 CE under the reign of Muhammad Bin Tughlaq. Devgiri became independent in 1347 from Delhi Sultanate.

In the Bahamani administration, the Wazir served as the chief minister or prime minister, overseeing the administration under the authority of the Sultan.
