Geography and Early Settlement of India

The Harappan civilization, which represents the earliest known urban culture on the Indian subcontinent, developed in the fertile basin of the Indus River. This river valley provided the water and rich silt needed to sustain large agricultural settlements.

Early human settlements were heavily dependent on rivers for freshwater, irrigation for crops, and transportation. Consequently, major early civilizations across the globe, including India, arose in fertile river valleys.

The Thar Desert, located in northwestern India, is extremely dry but does receive a small amount of seasonal rainfall during the summer monsoon. There are no major permanent rivers, lakes, or streams that supply significant water to this arid region.

The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is characterized by vast stretches of shifting sand dunes and rocky, stony plains. It has very sparse vegetation consisting mostly of drought-resistant shrubs rather than tropical plants or forests.

All three of these major rivers (the Nile in Egypt, and the Ganges and Indus in India) have historically been critical sources of water for irrigating agricultural land. They deposited fertile silt during seasonal floods, allowing civilizations to grow crops.

The Indus River originates in the Tibetan Plateau, flows northwest through the Himalayas, and then turns south-southwest through Pakistan to empty into the Arabian Sea. The Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers, on the other side of the subcontinent, flow into the Bay of Bengal.

The Himalayas are geologically active and prone to various natural hazards, including snowstorms, earthquakes, and landslides.

The Ganges River carries nutrient-rich silt from the mountains, which is deposited on the plains during floods, creating highly fertile agricultural land.
