Geography of Early India

A subcontinent is a large landmass that is smaller than a continent but is geographically separated from the rest of the continent by physical barriers like mountains. The Indian subcontinent is a prime example, separated from the rest of Asia by the Himalayas.

India is a country, a subcontinent, and a peninsula because it is surrounded by water on three sides. However, it is not a continent on its own; rather, it is part of the continent of Asia.

Physical features are the natural landforms and characteristics of the Earth's surface, such as mountains, rivers, valleys, and deserts. They do not include human systems like government or temporary weather conditions like temperature.

A monsoon is a seasonal wind pattern in South Asia that blows from the southwest in summer, bringing heavy rains, and from the northeast in winter. These winds and the rain they bring are critical for agriculture in India.

India actually has massive natural physical barriers, such as the Himalaya and Hindu Kush mountain ranges to the north and northwest, and oceans on its other sides. While invaders did occasionally enter through mountain passes like the Khyber Pass, the statement that India lacked natural physical barriers is false.

India is classified as a subcontinent because it is a massive, distinct landmass that is geographically isolated from the rest of Asia by major physical barriers, primarily the Himalaya and Hindu Kush mountain ranges.

Just like ancient Egypt developed along the Nile and Mesopotamia along the Tigris and Euphrates, the earliest Indian civilization developed along the Indus River. Rivers provided the water and fertile soil necessary to support agriculture and growing populations.
