This made him the first player to take two hat-tricks in a single IPL season, a unique record in the tournament's history.

RP Singh secured the Purple Cap in IPL 2009 by claiming 23 wickets, the highest tally that season. While Muralitharan was also among the top wicket-takers, RP Singh's consistent performances throughout the tournament earned him this distinction.
