Physical Geography of India

A monsoon is a seasonal prevailing wind in the region of South and Southeast Asia, blowing from the southwest between May and September and bringing rain, or from the northeast between October and April. While it brings heavy rains, the term itself refers to the wind system.

South Asia experiences three distinct seasons shaped by the monsoon winds: the cool season, the hot season, and the rainy season. This cycle differs from the traditional four-season model found in temperate regions.

Unlike temperate regions that have four seasons, South Asia has three main seasons: cool, hot, and rainy. These seasons are heavily influenced by the shifting patterns of the monsoon winds.

The Deccan Plateau is a massive triangular plateau that covers most of the southern peninsula of India. It is bordered by the Western Ghats to the west and the Eastern Ghats to the east.

The Ganges and the Indus are two of the most prominent and historically significant rivers on the Indian subcontinent. The Tigris and Euphrates, by contrast, are located in Mesopotamia.

The Northern Plains, also known as the Indo-Gangetic Plains, are watered by three major river systems: the Indus, the Ganges, and the Brahmaputra, along with their numerous tributaries. This abundance of rivers makes the region incredibly fertile and flat.

The Northern Plains are formed by the alluvial deposits of major river systems like the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra, making them highly fertile and excellent for agriculture. In contrast, the Northern Mountain Rim is rugged and mountainous, while the Deccan Plateau is relatively dry and rocky.

The Northern Plains have flat land, fertile soil, and abundant water resources, which support intensive agriculture and large populations. The Northern Mountain Rim has harsh, rugged terrain, and the Deccan Plateau has a drier climate, making both less densely populated.

The Himalayas are a massive mountain range located along the northern border of India, defining the Northern Mountain Rim. The Northern Plains lie directly south of these mountains, while the Deccan Plateau is located in the southern peninsula.
