The Vijayanagara Empire: History and Culture

A gopuram is a monumental entrance tower, usually ornate, at the entrance of a Hindu temple, particularly in Southern India. It serves as a gateway to the temple complex.

The Chennakeshava Temple, also referred to as the Keshava Temple, is a magnificent Hoysala temple located at Belur in the Hassan district of Karnataka. It was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE.

Lord Virupaksha, a form of Shiva, was the patron deity of the Vijayanagara rulers. The kings ruled on behalf of Virupaksha, and all royal orders were signed in his name.

The Amara-nayakas were military commanders who were given territories to govern by the Raya (ruler) of Vijayanagara. They collected taxes and maintained a military force to assist the king during wars.

The Battle of Talikota in 1565 CE was a decisive battle fought between the Vijayanagara Empire and the combined forces of the Deccan Sultanates. The defeat of Vijayanagara led to the destruction and eventual decline of the empire.

Krishnadeva Raya, the most famous ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire, founded the suburban township of Nagalapuram near Vijayanagara, naming it after his mother, Nagala Devi.

The Vijayanagara Empire was founded in 1336 CE by two brothers, Harihara I and Bukka Raya I, of the Sangama dynasty. Therefore, both are considered founders of the empire.

The Sangama dynasty was overthrown by Saluva Narasimha in 1485 CE, marking the beginning of the Saluva dynasty (spelled 'Suluv' in the options). This event is known as the First Usurpation of the Vijayanagara Empire.

The Vijayanagara Empire was ruled by four distinct dynasties in succession: the Sangama dynasty, the Saluva dynasty, the Tuluva dynasty, and the Aravidu dynasty.
