British Empire in India: From Company Rule to Crown Control

Following the 1857 uprising, the British rapidly expanded the railway network for military and economic control, increasing the track length from 288 miles in 1857 to 1,588 miles by 1861.

Following the 1857 rebellion, the British restructured the Indian Army to prevent future mutinies, reducing the proportion of Indian sepoys by approximately 40% while increasing the ratio of European soldiers.

During the Siege of Cawnpore in June 1857, Nana Sahib offered safe passage to the British garrison. However, as they boarded boats at Satichaura Ghat, firing broke out, resulting in the deaths of approximately 400 British soldiers and civilians.

In Meerut, 85 sepoys of the 3rd Bengal Light Cavalry refused to use the new Enfield rifle cartridges, which they believed were greased with animal fat. They were court-martialled, stripped of their uniforms, and sentenced to ten years of hard labor, which triggered the wider rebellion the following day.

The General Service Enlistment Act was passed in 1856. It required new recruits to the Bengal Army to serve overseas if needed, which deeply offended high-caste Hindu sepoys who believed crossing the "black water" (kala pani) would lose them their caste status.

The Kingdom of Awadh was formally annexed by the British East India Company on February 7, 1856, under the administration of Lord Dalhousie, who claimed the region suffered from extreme misgovernance. This annexation deeply alienated the local population and the sepoys recruited from the region.

The English Education Act was passed in 1835, implementing the proposals of Thomas Babington Macaulay. This act redirected educational funding in India toward Western-style curriculum taught in English, sidelining traditional Sanskrit and Arabic learning.

The practice of Sati, where a widow immolated herself on her husband's funeral pyre, was formally banned in December 1829 by Governor-General Lord William Bentinck, with significant support from Indian reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy.

During the British campaign to suppress the Thuggee cult led by William Sleeman in the 1830s, approximately 1,000 Thugs were executed or transported to penal colonies, while around 3,000 in total were tried and punished. This campaign significantly reduced ritualized highway robbery and murder in India.

A series of legislative measures known as the Thuggee and Dacoity Suppression Acts were enacted between 1836 and 1848 to systematically outlaw and prosecute these criminal networks under special courts.

On the eve of the 1857 Rebellion, the military force in India was heavily unbalanced, with only 45,522 European soldiers compared to a total force of 277,746 soldiers (the rest being native sepoys). This vast numerical disparity made the British highly vulnerable when the mutiny broke out.

The Act of 1786 was passed specifically to persuade Lord Cornwallis to accept the position of Governor-General of India. It granted him the authority to override the majority of his council in emergency situations and to combine the offices of Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief.

The Regulating Act of 1773 established a five-member governing council in Bengal, consisting of the Governor-General and four councilors. To balance power, two members represented the East India Company, while three members were nominated directly by the British Parliament, often leading to political deadlock.

The Charter Act of 1813 ended the East India Company's commercial monopoly in India, opening up trade to other British merchants. However, the Company was allowed to retain its highly lucrative monopoly on the tea trade and all trade with China.

The Charter Act of 1813 was passed by the British Parliament to renew the East India Company's charter for another 20 years. This periodic 20-year renewal was a standard practice, also seen in the subsequent Charter Acts of 1833 and 1853.

Historically, textbooks on Indian geography and culture often simplify the vast linguistic diversity of the subcontinent by noting that while there are hundreds of local dialects, they are broadly categorized under six major language groups or main languages.
