Akbar the Great

Akbar the Great was the third emperor of the Mughal dynasty, ruling from 1556 to 1605. The dynasty was founded by his grandfather Babur and ruled over much of the Indian subcontinent.

Although the Mughals had Timurid and Mongol ancestry, Akbar ruled the Mughal Empire in India, not the Mongol Empire or a Mongolian dynasty.

Emperor Akbar actively encouraged international trade, establishing commercial relations with European powers like the Portuguese and various Asian nations. This trade boosted the Mughal economy and brought new goods and wealth into the empire.

Akbar married several women, most notably Mariam-uz-Zamani (often referred to as Jodha Bai in popular culture), who was a Rajput (Indian) princess. These political marriages helped him secure alliances with powerful Hindu rulers.

Akbar was born and raised as a Muslim. Although he later founded a syncretic religious program called Din-i Ilahi to merge elements of various faiths, his primary personal and ruling background was Islamic.

The Mughal Empire was established and centered in the Indian subcontinent, ruling over vast territories that comprise modern-day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and parts of Afghanistan.

Akbar ascended the Mughal throne in 1556 at the young age of 13 (often rounded to 14 in historical texts) following the sudden death of his father, Humayun. Due to his youth, his regent Bairam Khan managed the empire's affairs initially.

Akbar was born on October 15, 1542, in Umerkot (now in Pakistan), while his father Humayun was in exile. This date is well-documented in Mughal historical records.

Akbar was famous for his policy of religious tolerance, known as Sulh-i-kul. He allowed people of all faiths to practice their religions freely and even built the Ibadat Khana to facilitate interfaith discussions.
