During the molting process, enzymes in the molting fluid digest and break down the inner layer of the old exoskeleton. The digested components are then reabsorbed by the epidermal cells and recycled to help construct the new exoskeleton.

The cuticle is the outer protective layer of arthropods that forms their exoskeleton. Its outermost sublayer, the epicuticle, contains waxes and lipids that prevent water loss and make the surface waterproof.
