Cell Structure and Function

Cells are the basic structural units of living organisms and are composed of millions to trillions of atoms. Therefore, even the smallest cell is vastly larger than an individual atom.

The nucleus serves as the control center of eukaryotic cells because it houses the cell's genetic material, or DNA. Other organelles like Golgi bodies and the endoplasmic reticulum are located in the cytoplasm outside the nucleus.

An autotroph is an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals. Heterotrophs must consume other organisms for energy, while unicellular and multicellular describe the number of cells in an organism.

Chloroplasts are the specialized organelles in plant cells that contain chlorophyll and perform photosynthesis to produce food. Other organelles like the nucleus control cell activities, while the vacuole stores water and nutrients.

Unicellular organisms consist of a single cell that performs all life functions. In contrast, multicellular organisms are made of many cells, while terms like eukaryote and prokaryote describe cell structure rather than cell count.

The cell wall is a tough, rigid outer layer found in plant cells that provides structural support and protection. The cell membrane is flexible, and the cytoplasm is the fluid filling the cell.

Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell because they generate most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy. The nucleus acts as the control center, and the endoplasmic reticulum is involved in protein and lipid synthesis.

Autotrophs are organisms that can produce their own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals. A rosebush is a plant that performs photosynthesis, whereas cats, dogs, and leopards are heterotrophs that must consume other organisms for energy.

Eukaryotic cells are defined by having a membrane-bound nucleus that houses their genetic material. Prokaryotes, such as bacteria, lack a nucleus and have their DNA floating freely in the cytoplasm.

Vacuoles are membrane-bound sacs within cytoplasm that store nutrients, waste products, and especially water in plant cells to maintain turgor pressure. The nucleus contains DNA, and mitochondria generate energy.

Cytoplasm is the gelatinous liquid that fills the inside of a cell and holds the organelles in place. The nucleus is a distinct organelle, and vacuoles and mitochondria are suspended within the cytoplasm.

According to cell theory, the cell is the fundamental structural and functional unit of all living organisms. Therefore, all living things, from single-celled bacteria to multicellular humans, are made of cells.

The cell membrane is a selectively permeable barrier that regulates the movement of substances in and out of the cell. This helps maintain a stable internal environment, unlike the nucleus which controls genetic activity.

One of the fundamental tenets of cell theory is that all cells arise from pre-existing cells through the process of cell division. They do not spontaneously generate or hatch from eggs.

The nucleus is considered the control center of the cell because it stores the cell's DNA and coordinates activities like growth, metabolism, and protein synthesis. Mitochondria focus on energy production, and Golgi bodies package proteins.

Organelles are specialized, membrane-bound structures within a cell that perform specific functions necessary for the cell's survival. They are analogous to organs in a body, but on a microscopic cellular scale.
